The list of universities charging fees above 15% increment approved by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) have been made public by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).
NUGS warned that it was going to report any university that goes contrary to the directives of GTEC after the 15% approved increment.
However, days after the threat, some universities according to NUGS are charging fees higher than the approved percentage increment of 15%
Below are the universities charging fees above the 15% increment according to NUGS
Nkrumah University of Science and Technology
According to NUGS, KNUST has disregarded the GTEC directive and are leading the charging of illegal fees.
“The university of Ghana has increased AFUF in some departments, well over 40% to make matters worse, they have increased RFUF by over 70% and in some situations 100%. They are leading the charge of the illegalities” NUGS has indicated. It furthered that the university has effected a 30% increment in AFUF and a 100% increment in RFUF.
University of Cape Coast (UCC)
University of Cape Coast (UCC) has also been listed as one of the universities engaging in the unlawful fee charges for the 2022/2023 academic year. The UCC is charging fees above 25% while at the Faculty of Social Science in the same university fees are up by some 27%.
University of Mines and Technology (UMAT)
At the University of Mines and Technology (UMAT), fees are up by 40% which is 25% more than the approved fees stated in the directive of GTEC.
University of Education, Winneba
In University of Education, Winneba, newly admitted students have seen a 40% jump in fees being charged but fees for continuing students have not been released yet by the university.
Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED)
The illegal fee increment can also be felt at the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) where fees have increased by at least 21%

University of Energy and Natural Resources (UNER)
The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UNER) is not left out of the fee issues as they have also disregarded the directive and charged the previous year’s fee plus 30%
The GTEC directive that all universities should not go beyond 15% increase of their 2021/2022 fees have actually fallen on deaf ears as the fees being charged are more than the approved. It indicated in the directive that any increases above the approved rate shall be in direct contravention of the fees and charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2022 (Act 1080), and likely to attract sanctions from the Parliament of Ghana,” it said in the statement.
