Inspiring Story Of Alhassan Sidi, PRO of Okada Riders Union
Al-Asbat Alhassan Sidi, Public Relations officer for Okada Riders Union has shared his life story on social media. Such life story has gotten a lot of reactions. According to him, life wasn’t fair to him after national service. He added that he couldn’t find a ‘better’ job that could fetch him more money after school. For that reason, he decided to venture into Okada business which is now making him some earnings.
“After a professional diploma course in Information Technology, I did my National Service at the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly. That was in 2015. I had high hopes, especially when NPP won power a year after.”

“The initial dream was to land a white-collar job after service leveraging my network of friends in power. But, fate had different plans for me. In the latter part of my National Service period, I worked in the office of the Municipal NSS Director, where I assisted with some paperwork.”
“National Service period lapsed, but I still availed myself to serve voluntarily in the same office. While there, I sought assistance from well-placed individuals in power whom I thought could help have me mechanized in the office as a permanent worker. All those attempts however proved futile.”
“Fast forward, a lady was sent to the office to replace me. I was told my services were not needed any more. Already, I was teaching Arabic studies mostly on weekends. I returned to the classroom to teach. Also, I had some few other menial jobs I was doing on the side to keep body and soul together.”
“I never gave up on my white-collar job dream. I wrote several job application letters and sent them out to different institutions. The few ones that called me for interview were offering something quite paltry for salary, mostly in the region of GHC 500. The menial jobs I was doing at the time on the side were paying me more than that, so I declined all such offers.”
“In 2018, I took a decision to venture into riding tricycle—popularly known in Kumasi Zango as ‘Adeideita’. I spoke to a brother living abroad to seek support. I was quite desperate. Initially, I told him I could do with even a second-hand tricycle. But, he cautioned against that and later sent me money to buy a brand new one.”
“One thing about riding ‘Adeideita’ is that if it belongs to you, the work is easier. The one I bought was mine. Often, I step out every day at 6am, take my first break at 11am, resume at 2pm and by 6pm, I would close. During the break, I make time for my other businesses. Through the same work—riding ‘Adeideita’, I have been able to start a small animal farm. I rear poultry and sheep.”
“Since 2019, there’s been no regret whatsoever. I work for five days in a week — Monday to Friday.
The tricycle is what I ride to feed and support family. After riding for a little over a year, I made enough money to buy another one. And another one again in 2020. Currently, I own three. I ride one and the other two are ridden by others who pay me sales, weekly.
It might not be what I had hoped for, years ago. But, the experience has been wonderful and the returns, amazing.
Looking back, I’m proud I didn’t waste time waiting for when I would be employed to work 8am to 5pm for someone. Today, even if I have a white-collar job offer which would not pay me at least GHC 3,500 a month, I will decline it and continue riding ‘Adeideita’.
Going forward, I’m hoping for more returns. I intend pumping more funds into the farming and eventually expand to do it large scale. That is my prayer!
