Imprisoned Russian Nationalist Girkin Considers Presidential Bid Amid Upheaval
In a surprising turn of events, imprisoned Russian nationalist Girkin Igor, also known as Igor Strelkov, has expressed his intention to run for president in the March 2024 election. Girkin, currently in custody for inciting extremism, has been a vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin’s handling of the war in Ukraine, warning of potential revolution and civil war. Despite his legal troubles, Girkin’s supporters, led by Oleg Nelzin, announced his presidential aspirations based on a letter from Girkin.
Russian Nationalist Girkin, a former FSB officer instrumental in the annexation of Crimea and the organization of pro-Russian militias in eastern Ukraine, had previously hinted at entering politics before his arrest.
Russian Nationalist Girkin Igor`s supporters projected an image of Girkin with the slogan “Our president – Igor Ivanovich Strelkov – ’24” during a meeting, generating applause. While Girkin denies the charges against him, the possibility of his participation in the election remains, given that he has not yet been convicted.

The announcement adds complexity to Russia’s political landscape, already facing a crackdown on nationalist critics advocating for a more robust approach to the war. The failed June mutiny by Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin led to increased government scrutiny on nationalist sentiments. Prigozhin’s subsequent death in a plane crash in August further heightened tensions.
Russian Nationalist Girkin, a monarchist critical of the post-Soviet Russian elite, perceives the war as an existential battle against the West. Despite his criticisms of Putin’s leadership, he acknowledged Putin as the only legitimate figure in the Russian Federation in May. In August, Girkin asserted that he would be a better president than Putin, citing the Kremlin chief’s alleged leniency towards security and military leaders.
Russian Nationalist Girkin Igor’s candidacy, if materialized, introduces a new dimension to Russia’s political discourse, challenging the anticipated candidacy of Putin, who may seek another term, potentially extending his rule until 2030. Amidst legal challenges and a tumultuous political environment, Russian nationalist Girkin Igor’s presidential ambitions mark a noteworthy development in Russia’s evolving political landscape.
