Increase teacher trainees allowance – GTEC petitioned
Increase teacher trainees allowance… This is the latest call by teachers under training in the 46 public Colleges of Education.
Teacher Trainees are knocking on the doors of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to undertake an upward review of their trainees’ allowance.
The call being led by The Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) was contained in a petition copied to Ghanaeducation.org.
The call for the increase of the teacher trainees allowance is the result of the current high cost of living in the country.
(TTAG) has also submitted a proposal to the Director-General of the Tertiary Commission and hopes their proposal will be given the needed attention and consideration.
The Teacher Trainees are hoping that the allowance would see at least an increase in the feeding component.
“The leadership adjured GTEC to consider increasing the allowance to yield an increment on the feeding component due to the constant hike in the price of foodstuffs,” the Trainees Association of Ghana stated in a press release.
In a similar development, the leadership of (GTEC) aims to forward the petition on the students’ allowance hike to key stakeholders for consideration.
In recent times, the Teacher Trainees allowance has been delayed, making life on campus unbearable for students. Reacting to the current situation, the GTEC Director said it is in contact with the Education Ministry and that steps have been taken towards ensuring their allowances in arrears are paid.

In response to TTAG’s worry over a lack of accommodation, Prof Salifu stated that advanced preparations had been taken to build dorm facilities on various campuses and provide shuttles to colleges to support the STS programme.

“PRINCOF had served notice on its inability to feed trainees on the coming days after Easter break should they not receive the arrears of the feeding component, hence measures will be employed for payment soon,” Director told TTAG.
