Infamous Witch-Doctor Dr. Beckley: A Dark Chapter in Ghana’s History

In September 2002, Ghana was gripped by a shocking and disturbing story involving Dr. Sri Ram Yogi Beckley, an infamous witch-doctor. Dr. Beckley made a bold appeal to President John Agyekum Kufuor’s government for compensation, claiming that his property worth 50 million old cedis had been destroyed.

The story began with the discovery of a macabre secret within Dr. Beckley’s residence in Gbawe, a suburb of Accra. During a search, school uniforms and human skulls of alleged kidnapped victims were found, suggesting that these gruesome artifacts had been used in rituals.

Following this discovery, an enraged mob descended upon Dr. Beckley’s home, setting it ablaze and leaving him and his family homeless. They sought refuge with friends as their world crumbled around them.

In an interview with the GhanaianTimes newspaper on September 11, 2002, Dr. Beckley held the government accountable for the destruction of his property. He pointed fingers at the police for allegedly instigating the damage. According to him, the police merely watched as the enraged mob looted his house and set it on fire.

Dr. Beckley maintained that he had been wrongfully detained by the police without committing any crime. He firmly believed that President Kufuor’s government owed him compensation for his losses.

While in custody, he was not acquitted and discharged by the court. In his words, “I promised to seek redress for any property that I toiled for all these years.” Dr. Beckley demanded justice for the perpetrators of the arson attack on his property.

When asked whether he would pursue further action if the government failed to compensate him, Dr. Beckley cryptically replied, “I shall leave everything to God should my effort yield no results.”

Dr. Beckley had earned a notorious reputation during the 1990s, living behind high walls that concealed his activities from prying eyes. Allegations of kidnapping young school children and women for sacrificial rituals sent shockwaves through the community. The victims who crossed his path experienced horrifying acts at his hands, with some tragically losing their lives.

The disturbing revelations led the outraged community to launch an attack on Dr. Beckley’s residence, ultimately resulting in his arrest.

The details of how Dr. Beckley’s life eventually came to an end are shrouded in mystery. However, one of his homes in Accra has undergone a transformation and now serves as a place of worship for a church and a prayer camp. This dark chapter in Ghana’s history remains etched in the memories of those who witnessed it.
