John Mahama Promises Legal Hijab Wearing in Schools

The President of Ghana, John Mahama, has promised the Muslim community in Ghana that soon it will be legal and sanctioned by the government for Muslim women and girls to wear their hijabs in school without any hindrance.
This was one of the pre-election promises the president made to Muslims in Ghana. For some time now, wearing the hijab has been limited to only Islamic schools in Ghana at the secondary school level. He added that the rights of Muslim women will be protected so that they can wear their hijab wherever. President John Dramani Mahama made this known during the Islamic thanksgiving service organised to thank God and all Muslims for their support during his reelection.
Still under education, the government will give scholarships to students in deprived communities, including Muslims, in the areas of medicine, law, and ICT. The president added that the government will also train more Arabic teachers to serve in Islamic schools.
Speaking at the national Muslim prayer and Thanksgiving service in Accra, the president assured the Chief Imam and the Islamic community of his readiness to ensure all promises made to favour the Islamic faith are honoured.
He added that the government will work to reduce Hajj fares drastically so that many more Muslims who want to embark on Hajj can do so. Again, the Holidays Act will be amended to add one more day to the holidays of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha festivities.
A “Soyiya” fund, which is a microcredit scheme, will be set up to help finance. It will target deprived communities, which include Muslim communities. Islamic banking instruments will also be established and introduced into Ghana’s banking and financial system.
The Muslim community and all members of the Islamic faith will be looking forward to the government honouring the promises to better the lives of Ghanaians in general. He called on Ghanaians to embrace unity and work together to develop the country in peace.
When the law is amended, hijab wearing in schools will be legal and faith-based SHS and private SHS in public SHSs will have to permit their Muslim students to profess their faith.
