John Mahama Struggles to Find Running Mate – Awal Mohammed

In the midst of Ghana’s political landscape, Awal Mohammed, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communication team, has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by former President John Dramani Mahama, of lacking focus and direction. Awal Mohammed claims that the NDC, instead of establishing itself as a viable opposition party, is overly focused on engaging in irrelevant politics.
During a discussion on Peace FM, Mohammed expressed his concerns, emphasizing that the NDC has been unable to present a clear agenda, especially as they have already elected former President Mahama as their flagbearer for over six to seven months. He went on to assert that Mahama is currently grappling with the challenge of appointing a running mate, suggesting internal disarray within the party.

This assertion comes in response to the NDC’s recent criticism of Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame. The Attorney General declared that he had no evidence to prosecute party and government officials accused by former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, of engaging in and promoting illegal small-scale mining, known as “galamsey.” Frimpong-Boateng had claimed that these officials were involved in promoting illegal mining activities, as stated in a report he authored in March 2021.
The NDC, however, contends that the Attorney General has been dishonest in his assessment of the report and is now calling for his immediate resignation. This situation highlights the ongoing political friction in Ghana, with both major political parties, the NPP and NDC, engaging in confrontations.
As the 2024 general elections approach, the NDC’s struggle to select a running mate and its ongoing disputes with the ruling NPP underscore the intense political environment in Ghana. With many issues at play, it remains to be seen how these developments will influence the country’s political landscape and, ultimately, the elections. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and clear leadership in a democracy, particularly in the lead-up to a pivotal election.
