1. The Traffic Light: In 1923, an inventor named Garrett Morgan invented the traffic signal. Morgan’s invention was an improvement on the existing traffic signals of the time and featured a warning signal for pedestrians. His invention was first used in Cleveland, Ohio, and is still in use today in cities around the world.
2. The Ironing Board: In 1892, Sarah Boone, a Black inventor, patented an ironing board that featured an improved design that made ironing clothes easier and more efficient. Her invention is still in use today and has been an essential household item for over a century.
3. The Super Soaker: In 1989, Lonnie Johnson, a Black inventor and engineer, invented the Super Soaker, a high-powered water gun that has become a popular toy for children and adults alike.
4. The Gas Mask: In 1848, Lewis Latimer, a Black inventor, patented an improved version of the gas mask. His invention was used by firefighters and miners to protect them from smoke and gas inhalation.
5. The Refrigerated Truck: In 1891, Frederick McKinley Jones, a Black inventor, invented the refrigerated truck. This invention allowed for the transportation of perishable goods over long distances and helped to revolutionize the food industry.
