Mahama Honors Late Pope Francis

President John Dramani Mahama has paid a moving tribute to the late Pope Francis, calling him a kind, humble, and deeply compassionate leader. In the book of condolence opened in honour of the late Pontiff, President Mahama described him as “a good man, personable and humane, with a good soul,” reflecting the respect and admiration he had for the Pope’s character and values.
His words captured both the personal and global loss felt by the passing of a religious figure who touched lives across the world. He prayed that the Conclave of Cardinals would be guided by God in choosing a new Pope, someone who could live up to the powerful legacy left behind. He also expressed a vote of confidence in a potential candidate from Ghana, saying, “I know one who will make a good Pope—our own Cardinal A.T.”

Earlier, in a separate public message, Mahama extended his condolences to the Roman Catholic Church, offering sympathy on behalf of his family and the people of Ghana. “The world woke up to the sad news of Pope Francis’ passing,” he said. “On behalf of my family and the people of Ghana, I extend heartfelt condolences to the Roman Catholic Church and all Catholic faithful in Ghana and across the world during this time of profound grief.”
He acknowledged the emotional impact of the Pope’s death, recognizing how deeply it would be felt by millions of Catholics around the world. The Pope, Mahama noted, had been a source of inspiration and comfort to people of all backgrounds, not only because of his spiritual role but also because of his genuine compassion and humility.
President John Dramani Mahama also took a moment to reflect on a personal encounter he and his wife, Lordina Mahama, had with the Pope during a visit to the Vatican. He described it as an unforgettable moment of inspiration and honour—one that left a deep impression on both of them. The memory, he shared, spoke volumes about the Pope’s humanity and the warmth he extended to everyone, regardless of status or origin.
