“Your salary as a teacher cannot support my vision. I’m not interested.” This is disrespectful and hurtful, no matter who you are. This painful act, which angered many teachers, occurred in December 2020.
The salary of teachers is always a sensitive issue, but for a man to use it as a basis for rejecting a marriage proposal from a lady is quite strange.
An Akan axiom says it is the dog that looks for the bone, and not the other way around. In Ghanaian culture and many others, this remains the traditional expectation. However, love can sometimes disappoint us all; yet, when you are rejected with such blatant disrespect, it leaves you with many questions. This was the case for a female teacher who was humiliated by the man she loved.
The lady decided to inform a male friend she had fallen in love with about her feelings. According to the story, first published by ghbase.com, the female teacher who decided to “shoot her shot” was left deeply disappointed. The response from the man of her dreams, though perhaps honest, was communicated with utter disrespect.

According to the lady, the man is a single friend who recently turned 30. She is 28 and also single. She was interested in this gentleman because he possessed every quality she desired in a husband. She wanted a man to settle down with and decided to take the initiative.
Unfortunately, it backfired. The man of her dreams used her teacher’s salary as a yardstick to reject her, instead of valuing the genuine love she expressed.
He told the female teacher to her face that her income was woefully inadequate to support or accommodate his vision. Heartbroken and disappointed, the lady shared her story, writing:
“I am a 28-year-old woman, single and not yet married. I decided to shoot my shot, to one of my friends who just turned 30 since he’s single, focused, and organized.
He answered me and said, ”You’re a school teacher, your salary doesn’t accommodate my vision board, I will pass.”

In our part of the world, men are often expected to propose to ladies and not the reverse. However, times have changed. A relationship remains one of the greatest emotional needs of a woman, yet the old adage remains: “Whatever a man can do, a woman can do better.” The disrespect shown by the man in this story has attracted the anger of social media users.
The question is: Is the teacher’s salary not good enough to help support a spouse? Is it not the man who must lead the vision and then receive the backing of his wife? We leave it to you to judge, but the “salary of teachers” excuse does not sit well with social media commentators.
Respect for Teachers in Ghana
The disrespect teachers suffer in Ghana knows no bounds. From the government to the citizens, many people look down on educators. In many instances, their salaries are not the best compared to those of other public service workers, such as nurses. There are many cases where men or women have looked down on potential partners just because they are teachers, as though these educators are not “qualified” enough to marry them.

Even the former President of Ghana, Nana Addo, had much to say on this when he told teachers to their faces that their profession does not permit them to make millions. The reality is that, throughout the history of Ghana, the pay structure has been carefully crafted to keep education sector salaries low. It is no wonder that learners refuse to see teaching as a lucrative profession.
Teachers need to think critically and develop innovative products and services within the profession to help them earn more and diversify their income.
As a teacher, I have worked within the education sector to build this blog along with the services on skulmanager.com. This is an attempt to prove to the world that a teacher can earn a decent income by leveraging technology, skills, and experience to help schools and other educators for a fee.

As a teacher, if you decide not to tap into the vast opportunities in the education field, people may see you as a non-achiever with a “too small salary”, just like the lady in this story. It is time for us to rise up and change the narrative about teachers and our income levels. Teacher unions must also work harder to push the government to pay decent wages. Finally, if you ever get the chance to practise your profession abroad, do not hesitate; it will always pay off.
