Marking of 2023 BECE scripts starts today: Know the marking process

WAEC has officially disclosed it will start marking the 2023 BECE scripts on Monday 9th October 2023.
The marking of the examination, which was administered to final-year Junior High school students, has been delayed due to delays in the release of funds by the government to the examining body.
Although WAEC is ready to work on the scripts, it has made it clear to the government that if what is owed to them is not paid, the BECE results will be delayed.
“So we have started the process, but what we are saying is that if monies are not released, we may not be able to complete it,” Mr. John Kapi of WAEC
Mr. John Kapi of WAEC has stated that WAEC held a meeting with the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, last Monday and he gave an assurance that he was going to release some funds to the council.
“So we have started the process, but what we are saying is that if monies are not released, we may not be able to complete it,” he said.
What is the WAEC 2023 BECE script marking process?
2023 BECE script-marking coordination stage
The 2023 BECE script marking process started on Wednesday, October 4th, with the coordination process.
The coordination stage of the 2023 BECE script marking involves WAEC bringing all markers (those who will mark the scripts) together to help them familiarise themselves with the marking scheme to be used for each of the nine subjects.
The 2023 BECE script marking coordination ended on Friday, October 6, 2023.
“They will finish the coordination on Friday (today), and by Monday, October 9, the actual marking will start,” the Head of Public Affairs of WAEC, John Kapi, told the Daily Graphic earlier.

He said the marking of the scripts, which formed part of the second process of the examination, had a challenge with the release of funds.
The 7 main stages of BECE script marking at WAEC
#1. Collection of scripts: The scripts are collected from the examination centres and transported to the marking centres.
#2. BECE script-marking coordination stage
During this stage, examiners and markers make inputs into the marking scheme to be used. All necessary corrections and additions are made for questions that could be answered in several ways. This ensures any candidate who provides such answers are marked correctly.
The 2023 BECE script marking coordination ended on Friday, October 6, 2023.
“They will finish the coordination on Friday (today), and by Monday, October 9, the actual marking will start,” the Head of Public Affairs of WAEC, John Kapi, told the Daily Graphic yesterday.
#3. Sorting and distribution of scripts: The scripts are sorted by subject and distributed to the examiners.
#4. Script marking: The examiners mark the scripts according to the marking scheme.
#5. Moderation: The marked scripts are moderated by a senior examiner to ensure consistency in marking.
#6. Entry of marks: The marks are entered into a computer system.
