National SHSs ranking to start soon – Education Ministry

Senior High Schools – SHSs ranking has been around for years but they have always been done by private institutions and groups. These Second Cycle Rankings based on academic performance encourages healthy competition among schools and students.
Recent SHS rankings have been based on NSMQ and WASSCE performances, however, these rankings do not often follow any standardized modalities.
National SHSs ranking scheme
The Ministry of Education has rolled out two ranking schemes for all senior high schools (SHSs) in the country. This new SHS Ranking scheme will place every Senior High School in its proper perspective for a better and full assessment of the free SHS policy among others.
First, the ranking will rate schools at the national level on the scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest score while the second dubbed: “Similar Schools Ranking” will place schools with equal infrastructure and grading in the same category for a fair assessment.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum, announced this in Kumasi on Monday during the recognition and award ceremony of the “10 percent Top 10 Schools” in the Ashanti Region.
The 10 represented 10 percent of the 135 schools in the region whose general performance between the score of A1 to C6 were assessed.
Per the criteria, if a school scores 100 percent at the WASSCE exams but most of its students score lesser grades such as C6 while another school scores 90 percent but with stronger grades such as A1, the latter would be ranked higher because of its superlative aggregate.

Currently, the top-performing schools in the Ashanti Region per the criteria is Tepa SHS followed by Saint Louis, Toase SHS, Kumasi High, Ghana Muslim Mission SHS, and Prempeh College.
The rest, which were all decorated at a ceremony in Kumasi were Kumasi Wesley Girls, TI Amass, Opoku Ware School, Pentecost SHS, Mankraso SHS, and Osei Adutwum SHS established by the minister and handed over to the government.
In line with the two new ranking systems, the minister said researchers were to be sent to each school for data and assessment which would be collated for both ranking systems.

He said all those were part of processes that would lead to the abolishing of the double-track system once they were completed. It is hoped the National SHSs ranking will encourage healthy competition.
