New Public Holidays and 4th August Holiday Update

Following the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Act, 2025, and the President’s assent, the Ministry of the Interior wishes to inform the general public about the 2025 Public Holidays and Commemorative Days in Ghana.

In all there are 14 public holidays to be declared for Ghanaians. At the time of this publication, a total of 10 of the holidays have been celebrated with only four more beore the end of the year.

PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

  1. New Year’s Day                (1st January)
  2. Constitution Day              (7th January)
  3. Independence Day           (6th March)
  4. Good Friday                       (18th April)
  5. Easter Monday                  (21st April)
  6. Labour Day                        (1st May)
  7. Eid-ul-Fitr (Ramadan)    (No fixed date)
  8. Shaqq Day                          (No fixed date) (The day immediately after Eid-ul-Fitr)
  1. Eid-ul-Adha (Hajj)             (No fixed date)
  2. Republic Day                       (1st July)
  3. Founder’s Day                    (21st September)
  4. Farmers Day                       (1st Friday in December)
  5. Christmas Day                   (25th Day)
  6. Boxing Day                         (26th December)

 

4th August Holiday Update

The 4th August Holiday has been replaced with the 21st September which happenes to be birthday of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president and leader of the CPP. The day also serves as Ghana’s Founder’s Day. It is used to remember the contributions and struggles of founding fathers of Ghana.

Per the above, 4th August is not a public holiday in Ghana. All workers in both public and private organizations as well as all state insititutions will operate just as any other working day.

SUBSTITUTED HOLIDAYS

According to Section 3 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601) as amended by Section 3 (2) of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1142), where a public holiday falls on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, the President may, by executive instrument, declare Monday or Friday as a holiday.

Additionally, where a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the President may, by executive instrument, declare Monday as a public holiday.

It is to be noted that substituted holidays do not apply to Eid-ul-Fitr, Shaqq Day, Eid-ul-Adha, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day.
