Facts Checked: GHS100 NSS personnel allowance to fund National Cathedral

Facts checked on GHS100 to be deducted from NSS personnel allowance to fund National Cathedral. Read the full facts as revealed by the NSS on the rumour.

National Service Secretariat has debunked the rumour that the allowances of National Service Personnel will be deducted to fund the National Cathedral.

Speaking on the issue to the media, the Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Secretariat, Dr. Gifty Oware-Aboagye, said the information making rounds was untrue. She added that the personnel who are yet to be posted will not experience any deduction toward the National Cathedral fund. She, therefore, called on all and sundry to disregard the rumour in its entirety

Per the rumour, the NSS was to deduct GHS100.00 from the GHS599.00 allowances for all NSS personnel for the 2021/2022 service year.

Dr. Oware-Aboagye stated the power to take such a decision lied with the National Service Personnel Association (NASPA).

The GHS100 to be deducted from NSS personnel allowance to fund National Cathedral is therefore not true.

She indicated that no such resolution had been forwarded to the Secretariat from the personnel association.

“Never true. The NSS allowance is without tax deductions and the figure comes as it is and nobody can deduct anything unless it is something that NASPA, which is their personnel association, approves of. The National Congress has already been held and they haven’t brought us any things as the Council wants to do a donation to the Cathedral,” she said in an interview on GTV.

The Deputy NSS boss also dashed hopes of a possible increment in allowance for prospective personnel for the 2021/2022 Service year.

She said that budgetary allocation to the Secretariat for the year has already been made, hence, the impossibility of an increment.

“That can’t be a plan because mid-year [budget] has been read. We did [our] budget last year, I went to defend and appropriate all our budgetary allocations. NSS personnel are paid from the government coffers and this is done through the system of us getting our budgetary allocation. So maybe next year, we could consider that,” Dr. Oware-Aboagye added.

Postings for the 2021/2022 service year has been delayed because some final year students were still involved in academic activities at their different institutions, Dr. Oware-Aboagye noted, the Secretariat was unable to distribute postings.

“You are supposed to be a graduate before you do service. The effects on academia are also affecting us. Almost all our processes are done, we are only waiting for schools to finally say that ‘we are done with school, our people have graduated’ then we can proceed for National Service to commence,” she stated.
