ECOWAS lifts all sanctions on four member states run by military

ECOWAS lifts all sanctions on four member states run by military

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) lifts sanctions imposed on Niger Republic, Mali, Burkina Faso, and the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, member states that are ruled by the military.

The ECOWAS officials said on Saturday, Feb. 24, that the decision was based on humanitarian concerns, particularly given the Lent season and the approaching month of Ramadan.

The day marked a significant turn as the regional bloc decided to lift sanctions imposed on the countries following coups. This decision comes amidst a backdrop of political turmoil across the region.

The lifting of sanctions includes measures such as the no-fly zone and border closures, effective immediately, as announced by ECOWAS Commission President Omar Alieu Touray. Touray emphasized that the decision was made on humanitarian grounds to alleviate the suffering caused by the sanctions.

The summit aimed to address the pressing challenges facing the region and urged three military-led nations – Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso – which had previously withdrawn from the bloc, to reconsider their decision.

ECOWAS Chairman and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu stressed the importance of restoring constitutional order in member states, including the suspended countries and Guinea.

The summit also discussed the conditions for lifting sanctions, including the immediate release of Niger’s ousted President Mohamed Bazoum and his family.

The move to ease sanctions is seen as a gesture of appeasement to persuade the withdrawing states to remain within the alliance, amidst concerns about potential coups and the fragmentation of ECOWAS.

The summit underscored the importance of regional integration efforts and the need for dialogue to resolve political crises in the region.

ECOWAS stands for the Economic Community of West African States. It’s a regional intergovernmental organization founded in 1975 with the aim of promoting economic integration and cooperation among its member states in West Africa. ECOWAS has 15 member states, including Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo. Its activities include promoting regional trade, facilitating economic development, and fostering political stability and peace in the region.

Egypt Closes the Largest Investment Ever with UAE

Egypt Closes the Largest Deal Ever with UAE

A significant step forward in Cairo’s attempts to resolve its worst foreign exchange crisis in decades was the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) commitment to spend $35 billion in Egypt.

The plans call for the development of Ras El-Hekma, a prestigious area on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa. Egypt’s Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, called this project the largest in his nation’s history.

The Abu Dhabi wealth fund, ADQ, said that it will pay $24 billion for the development rights to Ras El-Hekma and spend $11 billion, which will come from UAE funds held in Egypt’s central bank, in more real estate and other high-profile projects in the nation.

Speaking on Friday, Madbouly stated that the agreement deal will provide Egypt with an additional $24 billion in liquidity. According to him, the plans would also be financed by the UAE converting its $11 billion in deposits held with the Egyptian central bank.

At the gathering in the new administrative capital east of Cairo, Madbouly stated that Egypt is now “very, very few steps” away from striking a new agreement with the International Monetary Fund following the accord.

Egypt’s foreign bonds saw a sharp increase on Friday, making them the best-performing government debt in emerging markets. The dollar note issued by the government, which is due in 2051, increased by a record 5 cents.

“This agreement represents a message of confidence” from the UAE, according to Madbouly, who also described it as the start of Egypt’s economic correction.

With the finance in place, Egypt might proceed with its much-awaited fourth currency depreciation since early 2022. The authorities were probably waiting for a significant inflow of foreign cash that would enable them to handle an adjustment, even though the IMF has been pushing for this action for months.

Egypt, according to Madbouly, anticipates upfront payments from the UAE in two installments. This will consist of $20 billion in two months and $15 billion in a week, with a third coming from the UAE’s deposits.

Six billion from the UAE’s residual deposits and $14 billion in new funding will make up the second tranche.

According to Madbouly, the money will assist in balancing the official exchange rate of the local currency with its value on the underground market. The pound is trading at roughly 30.9 per dollar at domestic banks, which is slightly higher than its street rate of about 60.

The pound’s three-month contract gained over 8% to around 49 on Friday in the non-deliverable futures market, indicating expectations of a less significant devaluation.

‘The Last Opportunity’

Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris, who recently proposed that authorities should align the two rates of the pound, described the agreement as “extraordinary support and unprecedented generosity” from the UAE.

Sawiris expressed optimism that “the Egyptian leadership realises that this is a last opportunity to change the current course” and urged the country to “listen to its people and open the closed doors of freedom” in a post on social media platform X.

Egypt will receive a third of the profits from the Ras El-Hekma project, and the Gulf state has agreed to a joint venture that aims to construct an international airport there.

There might be more money coming to Egypt. Its current $3 billion rescue package, of which very little has been distributed, could be increased to more than $10 billion through a proposed deal with the IMF, which would also bring in additional partners.

The agreement will strengthen Egypt’s relations with the United Arab Emirates, whose capital is Abu Dhabi. President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has the support of the energy-rich Gulf nation, which has pledged investments and other forms of support for the Egyptian economy, which has been stuck in a crisis for nearly two years.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. economist Farouk Soussa stated, “The magnitude of the investment is far greater than what we had been expecting, and the timing is far sooner.” In the upcoming days and weeks, it “offers Egypt the chance to restore two-way liquidity in the FX market.”

The UAE’s most recent round of funding started in 2022 with a $5 billion deposit in Egypt’s central bank and payments of roughly $2 billion by ADQ for transactions that included the acquisition of roughly 18% of Commercial International Bank, the largest listed lender in Africa.

ADQ invested $800 million in minority positions in the petrochemical manufacturer Egyptian Linear Alkyl Benzene, the oil company Egyptian Drilling Co., and the Egyptian Ethylene and Derivatives Co.

A local-currency swap agreement worth approximately $1.4 billion was agreed by Egypt and the Gulf nation in September, and a UAE business paid $625 million for a 30% interest in Egypt’s largest tobacco industry.

Work on Ras El-Hekma, whose enormous expanse spans over 170 million square metres and is almost three times the size of Manhattan, is expected to begin in early 2025, according to ADQ.

“This deal is revolutionary because of its size and timeliness, which significantly alters Egypt’s future prospects,” stated Monica Malik, chief economist at Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank PJSC. “The inflows will significantly help Egypt meet its external funding needs and reduce its foreign exchange backlog.”

US Sanctions 500 Targets Connected to Russia

US Sanctions 500 Targets Connected to Russia

The opposition leader Alexey Navalny was killed in prison three years ago, and in retaliation, Moscow invaded Ukraine. The United States imposed sanctions on Russia over 500 Russian-affiliated targets.

Additionally, US President Joe Biden stated on Friday that Washington has taken steps to further cut Russia’s energy income and has placed additional export restrictions on almost 100 organisations for support of Russia.

The Russian financial system, its military industrial base, future energy production, evading sanctions, and officials thought to be involved in Navalny’s death are among the entities and sectors targeted, according to the Treasury and State departments.

The measures, which target Russian businessmen, including the head of state-owned VTB Bank, Russia’s second-largest bank, are the largest single tranche of penalties since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. The announcement was made by the US Department of Justice on Thursday.

Regarding the penalties, Biden stated, “They will ensure Putin pays an even steeper price for his aggression abroad and repression at home.”

The White House announced last week that it was planning “major” punishments following the murder of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s main rival, Navalny, in an Arctic prison colony. last announcement prompted the additional economic restrictions.

After meeting with Navalny’s widow Yulia and daughter Dasha in California on Thursday, Biden declared that “sanctions against Putin, who is responsible for his death, will be announced tomorrow.”

The Kremlin has denied that Putin was the reason behind Navalny’s demise and has chastised the West for drawing conclusions before there was sufficient evidence to support them.

Wally Adeyemo, the deputy secretary of the US Treasury, said the Reuters news agency on Thursday that additional nations will join forces with the US to impose sanctions on Russia for its war on Ukraine.

“We’re going to announce hundreds of sanctions just in the United States tomorrow, but it’s crucial to take a broader view and recognise that other countries are also acting in this way,” Adeyemo stated.

Washington has been working with its partners in Europe to isolate Russia from the international economy.

On Friday, the European Union unveiled its thirteenth round of sanctions against Russia, prohibiting almost two hundred more organisations and people who are said to have been involved in the two-year conflict.

EU foreign policy leader Joseph Borrell declared, “Today, we are further tightening the restrictive measures against Russia’s military and defence sector.” “We are steadfast in our resolve to undermine Russia’s military apparatus and support Ukraine in triumphing in its just battle for self-defense.”

Sanctions have been placed by the UK on six personnel in charge of the prison colony where Navalny passed away.

According to Wally Adeyemo, “the goal of sanctions and export controls is to slow down Russia and make it more difficult for them to fight their preferred war in Ukraine.”

Money previously allocated for Ukraine by the Biden administration has run out, and a request for further money to support Ukraine militarily is stalled in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

“But in the end, Congress must take action to give Ukraine the resources and weapons they need in order to expedite their progress and enable them to defend themselves.” Adeyemo mentioned

In an effort to obstruct Moscow’s use of technology and equipment to support its military, the US and its allies have also placed trade restrictions, frozen billions of dollars’ worth of assets held by the Russian central bank, and capped the price at which Russian crude oil could be traded on international markets. They haven’t, however, diminished Russia’s capacity for warfare.

Putin asserted on Friday that four new supersonic nuclear-capable bombers had recently been delivered to the Air Force and that 95% of Russia’s strategic nuclear forces had been upgraded.

He also hailed the soldiers fighting in Ukraine as heroes who are fighting for “truth and justice” in a speech that was filmed to commemorate Russia’s annual Defender of the Fatherland Day, which honours the military services.

Faith Patricia Ariokot, a 29-year-old environmental activist from Kampala, Uganda, has achieved a remarkable feat by setting a Guinness World Record for the longest time spent hugging a tree. Hugging Tree for 16 hours is the new  Guinness World Record.

This remarkable achievement was not without its challenges. Despite being her third attempt within a month, Faith encountered obstacles during her previous endeavors, including technical issues with recording equipment and inclement weather conditions.

Unlike certain other Guinness World Records, Faith’s challenge was not a marathon exceeding 24 hours. Nevertheless, she endured the grueling task without breaks, keeping her arms firmly wrapped around the tree and remaining standing throughout the duration.

Reflecting on the physical toll of the feat, Faith recounted the discomfort she endured, with her feet aching and the tree’s rough surface causing pain and cuts. Despite moments of doubt and the urge to give up, Faith found solace in the tree’s presence, believing it provided her with the strength to persevere.

Faith’s groundbreaking accomplishment serves as a rallying cry for global action in support of environmental conservation. Her hope is that her record-setting hug will inspire individuals worldwide to take proactive steps towards tree planting and environmental stewardship.

Ghana is celebrating Afua Asantewaa for wining NOTHING – BongoIdeas

celebrating Afua Asantewaa for wining NOTHING

Albert Nat Hyde, A.K.A. BongoIdeas, argued about the possible Guinness World Record disqualification of Afua and on February 17, 2024, indicated that Ghana was celebrating Afua Asantewaa for winning nothing. According to him, although Afua Asantewaa provided evidence of her sing-a-Thon to GWR and also paid $750 for express review service, the absence of news on whether she had broken the current rock meant her attempt has been a failure.

“8 weeks after submitting her attempt to GWR and paying $750, Afua Asantewaa has yet to hear from them. Ideally, if you’ve not received a confirmation by now, it means  failure!” Basically, her only record now is being a celebrity who’s being celebrated nationwide for winning nothing! BongoIdeas stated this in his February 17th tweet.

Following the news emanating from the Guinness World Record indicating the disqualification of Afua Asantewaa’s BongoIdeas, BongoIdeas took to his Twitter account once again to indicate that footballers are celebrated for winning trophies, athletes are celebrated for winning races, and musicians are celebrated for topping charts. However, Ghana has Afua Asantewaa, the first celebrity who was celebrated for winning NOTHING!.

READ: Guinness World Record Disqualifies Afua Asantewaa’s Singathon Attempt

Prior to the Guinness World Record attempt by Afua Asantewaa, BongoIdeas indicated that her attempt was a failure because, per his analysis, Afua had broken several rules that were to be adhered to by anyone attempting to break or set such a record.

Among the rules she broke per his observation were…

  1. She just murmured to most of the songs and did not actually sing them.
  2. She repeated several songs in the space of 4 hours, e.g., Freedom
  3. She performed most of the songs for more than 2 minutes.
  4. She took more breaks than expected.
  5. She, at most times, failed to sing continuously for 30+ seconds without a pause.
  6. Most of the songs performed are not recognised by @GWR.
  7. She was not supposed to jam, and she did!

The above observations and predictions by BongoIdeas have vindicated him and proven that his criticisms are often so real that people do not want to accept the bitter truth he puts out.

Guinness World Record Disqualifies Afua Asantewaa’s Singathon Attempt

Guiness World Record Disqualifies Afua Asantewaa

The Guinness World Record Disqualifies Afua Asantewaa’s Singathon Attempt. According to GWL, the evidence check had already begun before Afua requested priority service. She received a refund earlier this month. GWL wished her the best of luck and urged her to try again.

Afua Asantewaa’s pursuit of a Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest singing marathon by an individual took a concerning turn. Despite her payment of $750 (equivalent to GHC 9,286) for priority review with GWR on February 1, 2023, there has been a significant delay in communication regarding her attempt, until today.

In response to inquiries about her attempt, GWR stated on Twitter that her effort to achieve the longest singing marathon did not meet the criteria for success. However, they expressed hope for her future attempts. They clarified that the evidence check had commenced before Afua requested priority service, so her payment for expedited review was refunded.

Why Guinness World Record Disqualified Afua Asantewaa’s Singathon Attempt

Even before Afua Asantewaa completed the attempt, BongoIdea outlined on Twitter several rules of the attempt that Afua had broken during her Guiness World Record attempt.

In a post, Afua is DISQUALIFIED for breaking Guinness World Records rules: BongoIdeas fires, and he outlines the rules broken. Check the story here

Two of the many issues he used to back his analysis and conclusion were that she (Afua) just murmured to most of the songs and did not actually sing them (lyrics). He added that
she (AFUA) repeated several songs in the space of 4 hours, e.g.: Freedom. Check the story here

Below is the full statement from the Guinness Book of Records

“Unfortunately Afua’s Guinness World Records attempt for the longest singing marathon was not successful, but we hope that she will make another attempt soon. We’ve seen how inspirational it has been for her fans. The evidence check had already begun before Afua requested priority service, so we refunded her payment earlier this month. We wish Afua the best of luck with any future record attempts

Earlier this month, Afua revealed that she paid $750 to fast-track her review process with Guinness World Records. Typically, the review process takes up to twelve weeks, but with payment, it can be completed within five days.

Afua Asantewaa completed her singing marathon at 126 hours and 52 minutes on December 29, 2023, aiming to break the current record. She submitted evidence of her attempt to Guinness World Records on January 6, 2024.

GWR’s response came after a TikTok user inquired about Afua’s attempt to break the record for the longest singing marathon. GWR assured her that they were reviewing her evidence and would communicate the results soon.

BongoIdeas’ prediction in his Tweet “Guinness World Disqualifies Afua” months ago has vindicated him.

Ghana To Bahamas Now Visa Free

Ghana and Malawi Now Visa Free

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has announced  that Ghana to Bahamas is now visa free. Foreign Affairs Minister, Madam Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, revealed that the government has successfully negotiated a visa waiver agreement between the two nations.

In an official statement released on February 20, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) highlighted the details of the agreement. According to the statement, the Government of Bahamas has officially communicated its desire to waive visa requirements for Ghanaian travelers. The agreement encompasses all passport categories, including Diplomatic, Service, and Regular passports.

The waiver initiative aims to streamline travel procedures and alleviate potential challenges faced by Ghanaian travelers when journeying to the Bahamas. To ensure smooth implementation, relevant Ghanaian aviation authorities, airline companies, and services have been duly informed.

A signing ceremony, attended by H.E. Andrew Wilson, Ambassador of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas to the Republic of Ghana, and Honourable Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, M.P., Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, marked the formalization of the agreement.

This development underscores Ghana’s commitment to fostering bilateral relations and enhancing international travel facilitation for its citizens. It also aligns with recent efforts by the government to expand visa waiver regimes with other nations, such as the recent agreement with South Africa for holders of ordinary passports.

Making visa applications free between countries is a significant step towards fostering greater connectivity, promoting tourism, and facilitating international cooperation. Firstly, eliminating visa fees encourages tourism by removing financial barriers for travelers. When countries waive visa requirements, it becomes easier and more affordable for people to explore new destinations, leading to an influx of tourists. This boost in tourism revenue can stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and support local businesses in the destination country.

Moreover, visa-free travel promotes cultural exchange and understanding between nations. When individuals can freely visit other countries without the hassle of obtaining visas, they are more likely to engage with local communities, experience diverse cultures, and exchange ideas. This cultural exchange fosters mutual respect, tolerance, and appreciation for diversity, ultimately contributing to global harmony and peace.

Additionally, visa-free arrangements can enhance diplomatic relations and bilateral ties between countries. By facilitating easier travel, nations can strengthen political, economic, and cultural connections with each other. This can lead to increased collaboration on various fronts, including trade agreements, educational exchanges, and joint research initiatives. Visa waivers can serve as a diplomatic gesture, demonstrating goodwill and a commitment to fostering mutually beneficial relationships.

Furthermore, making visa applications free aligns with the principles of equality and fairness in international relations. It eliminates discriminatory practices that may disproportionately affect citizens of certain countries based on their nationality or economic status. By treating all travelers equally and granting them the freedom to move across borders without unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles, countries uphold the values of inclusivity and global citizenship.

In conclusion, the need for countries to make their visa applications free for other countries lies in the promotion of tourism, cultural exchange, diplomatic relations, and equality. By embracing visa-free travel, nations can unlock numerous benefits for their citizens and the global community, ultimately contributing to a more interconnected and harmonious world.

Fetish priest storms church for charm

A fetish priest in Accra, popularly known as Nana 5:30, stormed the Vision Power Ministry at Amamole, a suburb of Accra, on Thursday, February 22, 2024, to reportedly demand a charm he gave to the church.

According to reports, Nana 5:30 claimed he gave a charm to the leader of the church, Odeefour Agyenim Boateng, to help him get more members and also perform miracles.

A video shared by EDHUB, a social media handle on X, on Friday, February 23, 2024, showed the moment Nana 5:30 and his team stormed the Vision Power Ministry.

One of the fetish priest’s men could be seen digging into the ground to remove a charm he supposedly buried there.

After digging for some time, he brought out what looked like a tied cloth, which didn’t look like something that had been buried in the ground for even a day.

“… this is my charm; I have uprooted it. I was the one who buried it here. This is it; this is our charm; we have come back for our thing,” the fetish priest said.

The group claimed that the pastor absconded when he saw them coming to the church.

A woman who was in the church, believed to be the wife of the pastor, could be seen in the video challenging the claim of Nana 5:30 and his team that they gave a charm to the pastor.

She said the fetish priests were scammers and accused them of planting the supposed charm just to disgrace the pastor.

A closer look at the supposed charm, however, reveals it is very clean when one would have expected to see it looking dirty based on the claims of the fetish priest and his team.

Some X users who noticed this pointed it out in their comments.
