High-end ELT summer schools eye untapped cohort

High-end ELT summer schools eye untapped cohort

The head of the new EC Global Achievers Academy explained that potential pupils are simply asking for more.

High-end ELT summer schools eye untapped cohort

“What we’re finding is that we’re getting a lot of students coming through with requests of a much higher level [of English],” Niall Greaves told The PIE News.

EC English, having been a mainstay in the sector for some time, has language schools in the UK, US, Canada, Malta and South Africa, and also hosts juniors in the former four countries through its Embassy Summer program.

EC’s Global Achievers Academy, open to 13-17 year olds from across the globe, is a totally different animal – and shies away from the usual language teaching model, Greaves stressed.

“Most of those applying for this course are B2+ level [by CEFR standards]. The traditional language summer camp is not for them.

“It’s specifically designed to give students the skills they need to be global citizens and the leaders of tomorrow,” he said.

The aim is to offer students a comprehensive experience, with more tailored extracurriculars and an emphasis less on the English language skills they likely already have, and more on how to develop skills that may serve them well at university and beyond.

And it isn’t the first provider to venture into the higher-end, more tailored space.

Oxford Royale, an exclusive summer program chiefly hosted at the University of Oxford with stints at Ivy League campuses across the pond also available if “student life in the US is preferred” – as the website states – has been running for some years. It is known as a leading “elite summer school” provider.

Junior programs in general were heavily impacted by the Covid pandemic, and in the UK especially, Brexit has continuously hampered interest from European students.

These more expansive – and crucially, pricier experiences, for the right students – could be the key to help some organisations recover quickly from the pandemic. EC Global Achiever Academy’s prices start at £3,000 per week, with each program lasting two weeks.

Also dipping its toes into the high-end market is UKLC, with a brand new, individual-facing Wycombe Abbey summer school program.

While English language learning is still very much a part of the course, electives and extracurriculars are highly-valued.

The language learning is much more specific to prep for work or a boarding school experience – something that’s been in particularly in demand with Chinese students, the company’s sales and marketing director said.

“The activities and excursions tie in with the topics covered during lessons for a more holistic academic approach,” explained Katya Bonello.

“The course is tailored towards aspirational students aged 12-17. This program is designed to equip participants with the necessary tools to maximise their potential to excel in an ever-changing world,” the release on the new camp said.

This more comprehensive approach is being taken by London School of English too. Its head stressed that once it could conduct its new high-end residential program as well as its more affordable mainstream courses, it was a gap in the market that not many were filling.

“I think especially recently, people really are investing in their kids”

“[It’s] a way of tapping into a new market strain – which is kids who’ve done this kind of stuff over and over again – they’re actually very oversaturated with summer courses and need something different,” Hauke Tallon, chief executive, told The PIE.

Extracurriculars that are offered by EC’s Global Achievers Academy include leadership, life skills, and technology sub-courses among others.

London School of English even has two-thirds of its program focusing on career development, as opposed to the general English learning portion which makes up the rest.

EC’s venture is even more nuanced – with the courses on offer at each location in Boston (at Harvard), London, Singapore and Cape Town. But the idea, one that hasn’t been seen before, Greaves posited, is that over a four-year period, students can go to each location, and have an entirely different experience.

“By the end of that, they’ve essentially travelled the world in this cohort and they’ve built these global connections by the time they’re 18,” he added.

There are no commitments for booking the full four-year roster, but the natural objective is to make the student want to come back to do the next location each summer of their teenage years.

“It’s tapping into a new market strain – which is kids who’ve done normal summer schools over and over again”

The only caveat, of course, is the price range for these programs – which are only open to a certain cohort of students – and thus, a smaller cohort of agents have been enlisted to recruit.

“While we’re not exclusive, we know it is a smaller market of people that have the ability to reach the market of these parents, so we have a group we’re working with and numbers are currently looking good,” Greaves relented.

The mantra for all of these new programs though is what could propel others to elbow their way into the market – it’s for students who have “done the standard summer camp and want something different”, as Bonello recounted.

“There’s plenty of options out there where people can study English but then actually having it sort of formulated like this, I think, is quite unique.

“There is definitely a demand for higher end programs and I think especially recently, people really are investing in their kids,” he added.

An “Electoral Dashboard,” which is anticipated to provide timely, dependable, and up-to-date election information during the 2024 elections, has been introduced by KNUST in collaboration with the Electoral Commission of Ghana and other stakeholders.

Potential benefits of an electoral dashboard

Transparency and accessibility:

The Electoral Dashboard, if approved for use, will provide timely, dependable, and up-to-date election information to the public, promoting transparency and trust in the electoral process. This will make information easily accessible in a central location, reducing confusion and misinformation.

Informed Participation: It will empower citizens with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about voting and engaging in the electoral process. It can also aid in increasing voter turnout by raising awareness and interest in elections.

Efficiency and Accuracy:

The electoral dashboard for the 2024 election will also help streamline the dissemination of election results and other critical information, improving efficiency and reducing errors.

This will further help to provide real-time data and visualisations, allowing for better monitoring and analysis of the electoral process.

Security and Credibility:

This can further enhance the security and credibility of the 2024 elections by providing a secure platform for sharing information and preventing manipulation.

This will further foster trust in the electoral commission and encourage public confidence in the outcome of elections.

In addition to the above, this electoral dashboard for the 2024 election may also offer features like candidate information, polling station locations, voter education resources, and complaint mechanisms. Finally, it can be used for historical analysis of past elections and to inform future improvements to the electoral process.

JHS 3 student summoned for allegedly farting at Amankrado's house in Onomabo, Eastern Region

JHS 3 student has been summoned for allegedly farting at Amankrado’s house in Onomabo in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

This unfortunate incident happened near the premises of the town’s Amankrado’s house. According to reports from Accra-based UTV, the Mankrado wasted no time in summoning the Abusuapanyin, Kwaku Aye, to address this audacious transgression. The demand on the table? A GH₵50 fine levied against the 18-year-old culprit along with the forfeiture of a sheep as recompense.

Despite earnest entreaties from the boy’s mother, beseeching for clemency and understanding, the Mankrado remains resolute in his pursuit of justice. Mr. Aye, however, deemed the matter frivolous and promptly dismissed it, viewing it as lacking any substantive merit.

Undeterred by this setback, the aggrieved Mankrado escalated tensions further by engaging in a confrontational exchange with the Abusuapanyin, adding a dramatic flair to an already tense situation.

Speculation runs rife among the community’s residents, with whispers suggesting that this incident may have provided the perfect pretext for reigniting dormant animosities, thus resurfacing long-standing feuds.

Disrespect towards elders by school pupils in Ghana can stem from changing social dynamics, peer influence, and the absence of positive role models. Modernization and urbanization may alter traditional values, while peer pressure within schools can encourage disrespectful behavior. Additionally, the lack of authoritative figures or positive examples may contribute to this issue.

lady self-poisoning over broken heart

A young, beautiful lady identified as Nafisatu Latif has taken her own life by poisoning herself over a broken heart from her boyfriend at Nkawie Toase in the Ashanti Region. Information available to Ghanaeducation.org is that she was 22 year old Muslim

According to information gathered by the Ghanaeducation.org’s odd news team, Nafisatu had doubts about her relationship with her boyfriend, suspecting that he may be cheating on her. She decided to use one of her friends to test his loyalty in the relationship.

Unfortunately, the test went to the extent that the friend she used as bait did not provide any feedback and kept ignoring her calls. This sparked a heated argument for about a month between her and her boyfriend until the unexpected happened last Saturday, when she drank po!son to end it all.

However, she did not d!e immediately and was rushed to Nkawie Government Hospital on Saturday evening. She was later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where she passed aw@y last Monday at dawn.

As Islamic customs demand, she has since been burred.

Former Brazilian Footballer Dani Alves Found Guilty of R*pe, Sentenced to Four and a Half Years in Prison

Dani Alves Found Guilty of R*pe; Jailed For Four And Half Years

In a startling turn of events, former Brazilian footballer Dani Alves was found guilty of s*xual assault and sentenced to four years and six months in prison. A three-judge panel in a Barcelona court handed the verdict following a three-day trial.

Alves, previously regarded as one of the most successful football players, is now facing the consequences of his conduct.

During the trial, Alves fiercely denied any wrongdoing, but the court found him guilty of s*xually assaulting a young woman early on December 31, 2022. The incident happened in the restroom of an upscale Barcelona bar, where Alves reportedly r*ped the victim. His defence attempted to depict him as inebriated during the incident, but the conviction remains a harsh reality for the football legend.

State prosecutors sought a nine-year prison sentence, while the victim’s attorneys argued for twelve. Ultimately, the court decided on the four-and-a-half-year prison sentence. Alves, who has been in jail since his incarceration on January 20, is facing the consequences of his conduct. Notably, Brazil does not extradite its residents who are sentenced overseas.

Dani Alves’ legacy as a great footballer has been devastated by his sentence. Throughout his career, he won multiple titles with top clubs including Barcelona, Juventus, and Paris Saint-Germain. He also contributed significantly to Brazil’s achievements, including two Copa América titles and an Olympic gold medal. However, this chapter has tarnished his achievements.

The Alves case is notable because it marks the first high-profile s*x crime in Spain since the country’s statute was overhauled in 2022. The law amendments put consent first and treat s*xual assault more extensively. In 2016, a gang-r*pe case in Pamplona’s San Fermín bull-running event sparked popular outrage, leading to this shift.

As Alves awaits the outcome of any prospective appeal, his fall from grace serves as a reminder that fame and achievement do not absolve anyone of responsibility. The victim’s courage in seeking justice highlights the necessity of addressing s*xual assault in society. Alves’ once-brilliant career is now soiled, serving as a cautionary lesson for all.

Ghana in trouble as MHA laments exodus of experienced psychiatric nurses

Ghana is in trouble as MHA laments exodus of experienced psychiatric nurses for greener pastures abroad. In 2023 alone a total of 123 nurses from the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital, and Pantang Psychiatric Hospital left the country to the United Kingdom.

This was disclosed by The Chief Executive of Mental Health Authority (MHA), Professor Adwoa Pinaman Appau, who has lamented the exodus of nurses working in the three psychiatric facilities under the authority’s care due to poor conditions of service.

She expressed concern that more nurses may also leave the country this year.

Dr Appau was speaking at the MHA annual performance review held in Accra yesterday.

She noted that the resignation and departure of experienced nurses in the facilities compounded the challenges of the MHA as it was left with no choice but to rely on inexperienced graduates.

Performance review

The annual performance review was held to assess the impact of mental health service delivery in 2023, as well as the overall performance of the sector and challenges, and map out strategies to ensure quality and accessible mental health care for all.

Other challenges, new initiative

Dr Appau said aside from grappling with the exodus of experienced nurses, the MHA also did not have enough psychiatrists, indicating that the country now has only 73 psychiatrists, with a ratio of one psychiatrist to over 400,000 people with reference to Ghana’s current population of over 30 million people.

This figure is however an improvement on previous years, as the country could only boast of 12 psychiatrist as at 2010.

The MHA Chief Executive noted that this year the authority would undertake a new initiative on the theme: “Fostering Community Well-Being through Progressive Mental Health Awareness Initiatives.”

Some participants in the performance review session

“This initiative is to help augment ongoing efforts to improve the level of awareness, reduce stigma and promote understanding of mental health in our communities,” she explained.

She added that the MHA was anticipating the announcement of the inclusion of mental health clients onto the national health insurance scheme to help address the medication challenges most of the clients faced.

Commitment

In a speech read on behalf of the Chief Director, Hafiz Adam, by the Director of Pharmacy at the Ministry of Health, Dr Joycelyn Azeez, he said more than 2.3 million individuals grappled with diverse mental health conditions.

He said mental health care was fraught with significant challenges, marked by a considerable 98 per cent treatment gap according to the World Health Organisation report in August last year.

“Only two per cent of Ghanaians dealing with mental health conditions have access to psychiatric treatment and support through healthcare facilities.

This situation highlights the gravity of mental health challenges in Ghana,” Mr Adam stressed, and noted that the government was committed to allocating resources to address the mental health needs of the populace and guarantee the necessary attention and priority it deserves.

Joe Biden's Dog Bites Secret Service Agents At Least 24 Times

US President, Joe Biden’s Dog, Commander has bitten Secret Service Agents at leats 24 times. The dog has been involved in numerous biting incidents, causing significant challenges for the US Secret Service agents tasked with protecting the President and his family.

Recent documents obtained through Freedom of Information requests shed light on the extent of Commander’s aggressive behavior towards Secret Service agents. These incidents occurred between October 2022 and July 2023, resulting in at least 24 biting incidents.

The biting incidents were severe, with agents being bitten on various parts of their bodies, including the wrist, forearm, elbow, waist, chest, thigh, and shoulder. Some incidents required medical attention, including stitches and treatment for severe wounds.

The repeated biting incidents forced the Secret Service to change their tactics, with senior agents advising their colleagues to give Commander plenty of room and adjust operational tactics to ensure personal safety when the dog was present.

Commander’s aggressive behavior led to disruptions within the White House, including the suspension of tours in the East Wing after blood was found on the floor following a biting incident. Additionally, Secret Service agents received medical treatment, and precautions such as providing a care package including painkillers, antibiotic ointment, pepper spray, and a muzzle were implemented.

Following a severe biting incident in October last year, Commander was removed from the White House, relieving the Secret Service agents of the ongoing challenges posed by the dog’s behavior.

The biting incidents involving Commander highlight the complexities and challenges faced by Secret Service agents in ensuring the safety and security of the President and his family, even from their own pets. Despite efforts to manage the situation, Commander’s aggressive behavior ultimately led to his departure from the White House environment.
