How Papa Kwesi Nduom came to serve in the Kufuor administration

Nduom serve Kufuor administration

The Unlikely Political Journey of Papa Kwesi Nduom in the Kufuor Administration

In the dynamic political landscape of Ghana, unexpected alliances and unconventional appointments sometimes shape the course of governance. A notable example is the foray of business tycoon and prominent Convention Peoples Party (CPP) member, Papa Kwesi Nduom, into the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Nduom, known for his entrepreneurial ventures and leadership in the private sector, took an unexpected turn into public service during the Kufuor era. The journey commenced when President Kufuor, aiming to assemble a team of experienced individuals after winning power with the NPP in 2000, recognized Nduom’s expertise and appointed him as a minister, despite his affiliation with another political party.

At the time, Nduom was a key figure in the business world, having made significant contributions to the financial and hospitality sectors. President Kufuor nominated him in January 2001 to serve as the Minister of Economic Planning and Regional Corporation.

Before this appointment, the CPP had entered into a written alliance with the NPP during the second round of the 2000 election, leading to the approval by the CPP central committee for Nduom to serve in the NPP administration.

The vetting process for Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom to become a minister captured national attention, especially considering his opposition party affiliation. Despite initial skepticism, the process allowed Ghanaians to appreciate Dr. Nduom’s capabilities.

Assuming office, he quickly earned the moniker ‘Mr. Fix It’ for his proactive and effective approach to addressing economic challenges. Throughout the Kufuor Administration (2001-2007), Nduom served in various capacities, showcasing versatility and commitment to national development.

His portfolios included Minister of Economic Planning and Regional Corporation, Minister of Energy, Minister of Public Sector Reform, Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission, Member of the Finance and Economic Committee of the cabinet, and Chairman of the Infrastructure Committee of Parliament.

Although Dr. Nduom has been away from politics and public appearances for some time, his recent presence at the funeral of the late Theresa Kufuor reflects the enduring impact of his unexpected political journey during the Kufuor era.

Completion of La General Hospital Project: Agbodza doubts govt’s ability to complete

I doubt if the government can complete the La General Hospital project – Agbodza

The completion of the La General Hospital Project is not possible as Agbodza casts doubts on the government’s ability to complete the project.

Agbodza, the Minority Chief Whip, has raised significant doubts about the government’s ability to successfully complete the La General Hospital project. In a candid conversation with journalists, he expressed skepticism regarding the government’s capacity to fully fund the undertaking, despite the assurances given by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta during the 2024 budget statement on November 15, 2023.

The Finance Minister had announced that the contractor for the La General Hospital project would commence work the following week. However, Agbodza, in a critical assessment, contended that the government might face challenges in providing the necessary €50 million for the completion of the project. He expressed frustration, particularly with the decision not to redirect funds allocated for the suspension of the Bank of Ghana headquarters to the La General Hospital. Agbodza argued that utilizing part of the $250 million meant for the BoG head office could have significantly contributed to the completion of the hospital.

What Agbodza actually said about the La General Hospital Completion chances

Highlighting the financial intricacies involved, Agbodza noted, “We all know that when they say a project is under Government of Ghana support, it means it’s under life support. I don’t foresee the government having €50 million easily to pump into that project.”

In addition to his concerns about the La General Hospital, Agbodza turned his attention to the GH¢220 million earmarked for managing dam spillage. He described this allocation as “woefully inadequate” and questioned its intended impact.

His skepticism centered on the multifaceted challenges posed by dam spillage, raising questions about whether the allocated funds could adequately address issues such as rebuilding schools, hospitals, resettlement efforts, support for displaced teachers and key workers, and the repair of damaged infrastructure.

Agbodza urged a more comprehensive discussion on how the allocated funds could be strategically utilized to meet the diverse needs arising from dam spillage management. His call for a broader dialogue reflects a concern for a more holistic and effective approach, ensuring that the funds are directed toward initiatives that can genuinely address the various challenges posed by the dam spillage.

In conclusion, Agbodza’s reservations about the La General Hospital project and the adequacy of funds allocated for dam spillage management underscore a broader call for transparency, strategic financial planning, and a comprehensive approach to addressing the complex issues facing these critical initiatives. The ongoing dialogue serves as a reminder of the importance of scrutinizing government projects and allocations to ensure effective and impactful outcomes for the benefit of the community.

We have no hands in pricing of graves – Mortuaries CEO

“We have no hands in pricing of graves” – Mortuaries CEO Dr. Yaw Twerefour, the Chief Executive Officer of the Mortuaries and Funeral Services Authority, has responded to concerns surrounding the rising costs of graves, emphasizing that the Authority does not play a role in regulating prices.

In an interview on Accra-based Adom FM, Dr. Twerefour clarified that the primary responsibility of the Authority is to issue permits to cemetery owners, ensuring safety measures and necessary amenities within cemeteries. The Authority’s jurisdiction is centered around maintaining records and securing cemeteries, rather than influencing pricing structures.

Here is what the CEO said about pricing of graves

Dr. Twerefour underscored the lack of control over graves pricing, especially in privately owned cemeteries. When issuing permits, the Authority does not dictate pricing; instead, private owners determine the fees for their respective cemeteries.

Acknowledging the evolving dynamics in the funeral industry, Dr. Twerefour called for support from the Ghanaian community to effectively fulfill their responsibilities. Responding to reported increases in burial costs, callers from various regions shared their experiences, highlighting varying charges influenced by factors such as tiles, steps, and additional fees imposed by landowners and local councils. The conversation sheds light on the complexities of grave pricing and the challenges faced by both the Authority and the public in navigating this aspect of the funeral industry.

24 Students in GREL operational areas receive scholarships

24 Students in GREL operational areas receive scholarships

The Ghana Rubber Estates (GREL) has awarded scholarship packages to a total of twenty-four students located in three different districts of the country so that they may continue their education at the higher level.

How students were sekected for the GREL scholarships

Two people were selected as beneficiaries from each of the three traditional councils located in the Western, Central, and Eastern regions, which are the places in which the corporation conducts its operations.

According to Perry Acheampong, the company’s Corporate Affairs Manager, the award, which is the 12th edition of the company’s scholarship package, is an improvement above the prior support.

More than 400 students have benefited from the scholarship programme since its beginning, according to Mr. Acheampong, who added, “In addition to providing infrastructure for the people that covers wide areas, raising the educational standard is our priority.”

According to what he said, the primary objective was to make certain that the assistance provided to the recipients would foster the development of new generational leaders. These individuals would then go back to their respective communities, where they would make an influence on people’s lives and serve as an inspiration to others.

He stated that the focus was not only on students entering the postsecondary levels but also on children in the basic schools located within the company’s catchment areas. He said this because the focus was on students entering the tertiary levels.

“Recently, we provided essential needs such as school uniforms, books, and bags to our young ones in an effort to relieve some of the burden that is placed on the parents and guardians,” he stated.

Nana Kwesi Agyeman IX, Chairman of ACLANGO, praised the corporation for its ongoing assistance of the communities that are located within its operational zones.

He stated that it was only logical that educational scholarships made it possible for a great number of people to further their education, realise their ambitions, and contribute to society.

According to him, the participation of GREL was a significant step towards the drive for skills development and societal transformation in the country, “and for our children to enter the workforce and contribute towards the development of society.”

One of the recipients, Blessed Nyamakye Ackah Baidoo, who is currently enrolled at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), has conveyed his gratitude to GREL for the tremendous help they have provided on behalf of his fellow students.

Snoop Dogg Claims He's Quitting Smoking, Asks for Privacy

Hours after Snoop Dogg made claims that he was quitting smoking, the world has been divided with regards to whether he can pull through with this.

The rapper and legendary kush enthusiast claims he’s giving up the puff.

“After much consideration and conversation with my family, I’ve decided to give up smoke,” he wrote on Instagram. “Please respect my privacy at this time.”

The earnest statement paired with equally solemn black-and-white photo and signature had some wondering if the remarks were some sort of joke. He couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Snoop Dogg Claims He’s Quitting Smoking — What are people saying about it?

Fans were a bit baffled by the statement. “I’m waiting for the plot twist,” wrote one. “Two days from now he’s going to say his account got hacked,” said another. “Smoking briskets?” wondered another.

Also, the statement doesn’t say Snoop Dogg is giving up cannabis per se, as edibles are, obviously, a popular option.

also read: Tyson Fury & Oleksandr Usyk ‘s Face-Off Erupts – Ghana Education News

The 50-year-old marijuana advocate famously smoked a joint while walking the red carpet at the MTV Movie Awards in 2021 and has business ties to various edibles and weed strains. He once said he smokes 81 joints a day and has a personal blunt roller.

Snoop Dogg previously said earlier this year that he’s cutting down on smoking after becoming a grandfather.

“Being a grandfather has changed me in multiple ways,” he told the Daily Mail in March. “The main way is being concerned with how I live, how I move, the kind of people I’m associated with, because I want to see my grandkids grow old. The only way I can do that is to take precautionary steps as far as how I move, who I hang out with, where I go out, my intake, what am I intaking. Am I doing extra-curricular or am I just doing what I’m supposed to be doing?”

Long thought to be relatively harmless, recent studies have suggested marijuana use is more damaging than previously believed. Two large longitudinal studies have suggested marijuana use can impair cognitive abilities to a “sizable and significant” degree.

Sammy Kay is also said to have published the aforementioned images and connected them to some pictures of an official from the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) based on this.

Sammy Kay’s arrest was justified, according to a press release issued by the Cyber Security Authority on November 16, 2023.
