The Nkwanta Chieftaincy Dispute curfew, effective from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., was enacted based on the advice of the Oti Regional Security Council and implemented through an Executive Instrument. This decision followed the deadly clashes that claimed the lives of six people and left numerous others injured.
In addition to the curfew, the Interior Ministry declared a ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons within Nkwanta and its surroundings. The Nkwanta Chieftaincy Dispute statement emphasized that individuals found with such items would face arrest.
The victims of the accident had fled the Nkwanta area before the curfew came into effect. According to Rainbow Radio’s Samali Abdul Razak, the tragic incident unfolded around 4 p.m. when the minibus, en route from Taviefe to Ho, collided with a heavy-duty truck ascending the hill from the opposite direction. The minibus, registered as GR 1645 W, reportedly suffered brake failure while descending the hill, leading to the collision with a rubbish compactor.
The loss of fifteen lives in this accident further compounds the distressing situation stemming from the chieftaincy dispute. As the affected community mourns the loss of these fleeing individuals, the incident underscores the urgent need for resolution and stability in Nkwanta to prevent further tragedies and loss of life.
