No Elective Subjects for SHS1 Students Who Will Pass 2024 BECE

When current 2024 BECE candidates who are preparing for their exam get to SHS1, they will not study any elective subjects. Per the Common Core Curriculum, these students will be learning the basic 10 subjects. 

When the Common Core Programme (CCP) is introduced by the GES in all public SHS in 2024, it will validate the import of this publication.

The nine subjects to be studied by SHS1 students will exclude elective subjects directly related to the programmes the students are going to be studying for their first year at the senior high school. 

The introduction of the new curriculum called the Common Core Programme (CCP) starts at Basic School 7 (JHS1) and ends at SHS1.

Once more, SHS 1 students won’t learn any elective subjects because all of the subjects they will study in SHS 1 are the same as those they studied from Basic 7 to Basic 9 at the basic school level.

They are mathematics, integrated science, social studies, English language, computing, RME, physical education and health, creative arts and design, career technology, French, Arabic, or Ghanaian languages. 

The only options students may have to choose from are the language subjects, which include French, Arabic, and Ghanaian languages.

Thus, learning elective subjects for SHS1 students will only start when they get to SHS2 in 2025.

Currently, at the basic school, the new Common Core Programme (CCP) has been introduced for JHS1 students, while the last two batches that will use the old JHS syllabus to write the BECE are those currently in JHS 2 and 3.

Students in SHS1 to SHS3 will also be the last batch of senior high school students who will sit the usual WASSCE for school candidates based on the old syllabus.

Once the current form 3 students in JHS3 complete their BECE, the old syllabus for SHS1 will no longer be used. 

We advise students to take theCommon Core Programme (CCP) subjects seriously and build solid foundations for their SHS1 programme after their BECE in July 2024. This will prepare them well enough to excel at the end of their studies at the SHS. 

Days after the publication of the above, we have received mixed reactions from readers. We look forward to what directives the Ghana Education Service (GES) will give on the subject matter.

Their directive will determine whether the Common Core Programme will commence with the 2020 BECE graduates or not.
