No Semester System For SHS; Draft Of New Academic Year Calendar (More Details)

Teacher unions in Ghana have urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) to implement the draft for the 2023/2024 academic calendar for all SHS.

This new development already began last year as they met at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters when they discussed about the 2022/2023 academic calendar.

The new calendar which was discussed last year at the GES headquarters has successfully been implemented by the KG, Primary and Junior High Schools (JHS). The new system was to move from a semester based to a trimester.

Regarding this new development that took place, all Senior High Schools (SHS) were left out.

The discussions that took place last year, the heads of all Senior High schools made it a point to change the Senior High School (SHS) semester based system to a trimester based system, hence, returning to the single track system and abolishing the double track system which has been in place for years.

The leadership of the Teacher Unions are still on the wait for the implementation of the policy that was discussed last year. With few months to end the 2023 academic year, the policy is yet to be implemented.

Regarding to this delay, the Teacher Unions are wildly demanding the drafts which was made last year for  the new academic calendar for both Basic Schools and Senior High Schools(SHS).

The new draft was to transition all Senior High Schools from the semester based system to the trimester based system. The urgency of this demand is one to keep an eye on.

This demand of the draft that was made last year regarding the new academic calendar were from the NAGRAT President, Eric Agbe-Carbonou, CCT-GH President, King Ali Awudu, and the secretary General for GNAT, Thomas T. Musah.

All the teacher unions are keenly waiting for the implementation of the new academic calendar (2023/2024). The Teacher Unions clearly stand on the point that, the trimester system is clearly a better way than the semester system. The trimester system will help both teachers and students as it will make them cover much of the syllabus and help greatly towards the writing of the WASSCE.

  1. I fully support the Teachers request for trimester so that our wards will prepare well for their WASSCE Examination so GES should kindly cancel the semester
    Thanks

    • Is Adutwum no longer the Minister of Education? What study did he do to introduce the semester system and where was it piloted?
The union leadership are part of the confusion in our education system. They need to be up and doing. Our education system is dieing.
