Okatakyie Afrifa Alleges Political Motives Behind Dormaahene ‘s Attacks on Otumfuo

In a startling revelation, Okatakyie Afrifa, a broadcaster with Angel FM, has alleged that the relentless attacks by Dormaahene, Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, on the person and authority of the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, are driven by political motives. According to Afrifa, the immediate political objective behind these attacks is to ensure that the 2024 elections favor the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Afrifa points out that while it may appear as a chieftaincy dispute, the real underlying agenda is political. Drawing parallels with previous conflicts, he states, “You think Dormaahene is engaged in a chieftaincy fight (with Otumfuo), this is how Dr. Agama and co started. We are untruthful.” Afrifa goes on to allege, “let’s detach the people of Dormaa from Ashanti, including the NPP, so that in the 2024 election, the people of Dormaa will vote against the NPP, which is perceived to be an Ashanti party.”
During his radio program on Thursday, October 25, 2023, Afrifa expressed concern that the continuous attacks on Otumfuo by Dormaahene may lead to a long-standing feud between the Asante and Dormaa peoples, which could outlive the Dormaahene himself. He warns, “Nana Dormaahene, you are dismantling relationships and marriages. You will destroy friendships in the town.”
Afrifa emphasizes that relationships at various levels, including work, marriage, and business, are at risk of being adversely affected if the growing animosity is allowed to fester. He implores Dormaahene to consider the long-term consequences of his actions, saying, “Nana Dormaahene, what you are engaged in will breed a generational fight. You would have been dead and gone. Your ceaseless attacks on Asantehene are not palatable to me as an Ashanti.”
The Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeayo Agyeman Badu II, recently made statements challenging the authority of kings in Ghana, citing the 1992 constitution’s lack of reference to them. He also warned chiefs under the Dormaa jurisdiction against paying allegiance to any paramountcy other than the one that granted them their throne. In response, Otumfuo emphasized that it took an Asantehene to elevate Dormaa into a paramountcy.
As this complex situation continues to unfold, it is essential to consider the broader implications, including potential political motivations, on the relationships and unity among Ghana’s diverse communities.
