Osei Tutu Senior High School: History, Programmes And More

Osei Tutu Senior High School is a senior high school in Ghana that is only for boys. It is in Akropong in the Ashanti Region. It is one of the best senior high schools in the Ashanti Region.

Osei Tutu was founded in 1940 as one of the Royal Institutions in the Ashanti Region. It was first a boarding school for boys and then a training college. In the early 1970s, it became a secondary school.

HISTORY

Osei Tutu Senior High School was founded in 1940 as one of the Royal Institutions in the Ashanti Region. It was named after Otumfuo Osei Tutu I, who founded the Ashanti Kingdom and is seen as a symbol of the rich culture and traditions of Asanteman.

The Methodist Church of Ghana started the school. It began as a Middle Boys’ Boarding School in a bungalow at Freeman College, which is across the street from Wesley College in Kumasi.

Rev. Arthur W. Banks, M.A., B.Sc., was the first headmaster. He was helped by Messrs. A. C. Denteh and Eric Awua, and there were 13 students when the school opened. Some of these students were Dr. Charles Graham, a former senior lecturer at KNUST, Mr. Isaac Oguame Tenney (B.Sc., B.Com), Mr. Peter Kofi (B.A, B.Com), a former lawyer and advisor to the Bank of Ghana, and James Adjei, a well-known Black Stars midfielder and coach.

In 1948, Mr. J.G. Quansah, who was the Manager of the Avenida Hotel in Accra at the time, moved the school to where it is now, in Asante-Akropong. At the time, there were 120 boys and 5 teachers in the school. But in November 1954, the school had to close because parents couldn’t pay the higher school fees.

On November 24, 1955, the school reopened as a two-year Certificate “B” Training College. The first principal was the late A.K. Folson. This stage started out with 60 students and 5 teachers.

Rev. C.K. Yamoah, B.D. (London), who had been President of the Methodist Church, took over on September 20, 1961. At this point, the number of students was 160, and there were 7 tutors.

In 1965, the college changed the Certificate ‘B’ from two years to four years. Rev. Yamoah was replaced as principal on September 22, 1966, by Mr. J.O.T. Ansah B. A (Hons) D.A, E.d.

During the 1972–73 school year, a number of Training Colleges in the country were turned into secondary schools. This included Osei Tutu Training College, which had to run as both a Training College and a secondary school until the Training College part was phased out.

Mr. J.O.T. Ansah turned the school from a training college into a secondary school. Mr. Amo Polley, the school’s Vice Principal, took over when Mr. Ansah left.

COMPETITIONS

Over the years, the school has taken part in the National Science and Math Quiz.

Has also been competing in debates and won the Ashanti regional zonal debate for the 2020 independence debate.

Hon. Samuel Sarpong former Ashanti Regional Minister

Dr. Charles Graham, senior lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology,

Mr. Isaac Oguame Tenney (B.Sc., B.Com), former solicitor and advisor to the Bank of Ghana,

Black Stars midfielder and coach, James Adjei.
