Otumfuo to destool Kwaprahene over double sale of lands – Report

In a recent development in the Ashanti region of Ghana, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has taken measures to destool Kwaprahene Baffour Adugyemfu Kumani. The chief is facing allegations of double land sales, which have led to a violation of the Asante Great Oath (Otumfuo Ntamkese). Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has summoned Kwaprahene Baffour Adugyemfu Kumani to appear before him in Manhyia no later than Friday, November 3, 2023, through the Akwamu division to address these issues.

The conflict arises from an incident several years ago when Baffour Adugyemfu Kumani sold four plots of land in Kwaprah to a man in the community. The man secured all the necessary documentation for the four plots but later faced issues upon his return from Australia. Kwaprahene claimed two of the plots and provided new documents, prompting a legal dispute. Despite a directive from Asokorehene to return the lands, Kwaprahene sold the remaining two plots to another private estate developer.

In response, the landowner invoked Asantehene’s Great Oath (Otumfuo Ntam kese) against the private developer, asking them to vacate the land. Kwaprahene allegedly instructed the estate developer to ignore the oath and continue developing the land, resulting in a formal traditional complaint against Kwaprahene during a Kumasi traditional council meeting chaired by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II made it clear that Kwaprahene should vacate the stool he occupies if he fails to honor the summons. He emphasized that Kwaprahene knows the reason for his summons and that dodging the issue with excuses won’t work. Otumfuo recalled the land dispute that Kwaprahene was involved in when he sold the Asantehene’s land without proper compensation, an issue that has now resurfaced.

A member of the Akwamu division indicated that it is likely Kwaprahene will be destooled. The case has been thoroughly reviewed, and there is little support for the chief, especially as the hearing date coincides with the Asanteman traditional council meeting. Chiefs who have disrespected Otumfuo Ntam kese in the past have not survived destoolment.

This case also highlights concerns about judges supporting traditional leaders in the Ashanti region to deliver unjust judgments that dispossess innocent people of their land. It is hoped that the judicial system will address this issue, especially when some chiefs are involved in land double sales, illegal mining, and the violation of traditional practices. While chiefs found culpable may face destoolment, those who have conducted themselves well in their respective areas may be elevated to paramountcy, in line with activities commemorating the 25-year reign of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on the Asanteman Golden Stool.
