Parents of 2025 BECE candidates raise concerns over unauthorized fees at Atomic Hills Basic School 1

Concerned parents of Atomic Hills Basic School 1, a public school located in Ashongman Estate, have raised concerns over exhorbitant  unauthorized fees charged by the school as learners get ready for the June  11th to 18th BECE.

While the Ghana Education Service has instructed schools not to burden parents with unauthorised fees, the practice seems to be on the increase and at the blind side of the GES. In some instances, the GES does not have any information on what is happening on the grounds. “These unauthorised fees are creating unnecessary hardship for families,” the letter indicated.

In a letter directed to the Ga East Municipal Education Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES), the parents complained of the alarming fees being forced on parents by the school and the PA.  Each child has been billed GHS250.00 apart from other charges already placed on parents.

Portions of the letter to the GES read:
“I am writing to bring attention to an urgent issue at Atomic Hills Basic School 1 in Ashongman Estate regarding unauthorised financial demands placed on final-year students.  Per the letter, “each final-year student is being compelled to pay GHS 250 for a school project as a legacy for that batch.”
“School Project Fees: Each final-year student is being compelled to pay GHS 250 for a school project as a legacy for that batch despite already contributing GHS 70 per term as a PTA levy. This additional payment lacks clear justification.”
“These unauthorised fees are creating unnecessary hardship for families, especially during challenging economic times. We respectfully urge the Ghana Education Service (GES) or relevant authorities to investigate this matter and ensure fair and transparent financial policies within the school.”
The concerned parents have called on the GES to take the needed steps to help bring to an end the current practice.
“We look forward to your prompt intervention to alleviate this burden on parents and students.” The letter indicated it was calling for GES to intervene in the matter.
