Nathaniel Chalobah’s early dismissal helped Newcastle, as Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson, and Sean Longstaff scored before the hour mark. Bobby Decordova-late Reid’s goal denied Nick Pope a fourth clean sheet this season.
Eddie Howe was relieved after his side claimed just their second league win of the season from eight games, but they have climbed up to seventh place in the table, just three points off the top four and one point behind sixth-placed Manchester United, whom they will face next weekend.
Newcastle has turned St. James’ Park into a fortress in recent months, losing only one of their last 14 league matches at home.
The Magpies are unbeaten in their last six league meetings against Brentford, winning five and drawing one. Their last home match was a 3-3 draw in November.
Brentford scored 15 goals in their first six Premier League games, but have gone scoreless in their last two against Arsenal and Bournemouth.
A 3-0 home loss to the Gunners was followed by a goalless draw against the Cherries last weekend.
Thomas Frank’s side is 10th and level on points with Merseyside rivals Liverpool and Everton. They are four points from both the top four and the relegation zone.
Brentford ended a run of 19 league away games without a clean sheet with a goalless draw against Bournemouth last time out. They will now look to keep back-to-back away shutouts for the first time since December 1937 and January 1938.
The Bees have conceded 11 goals in their last three meetings at St James’ Park against Newcastle.

Jonjo Shelvey, Emil Krafth, and Karl Darlow are out with long-term injuries, and Allan Saint-Maximin is doubtful with a thigh injury.
Bruno Guimaraes, Joe Willock, and Sean Longstaff played well in central midfield last week and are expected to start again. Ryan Fraser will compete with Jacob Murphy to start in the front three.
Pontus Jansson injured his hamstring against Bournemouth and will miss Brentford’s trip to Newcastle.
Christian Norgaard (Achilles), Keane Lewis-Potter (knock), and Charlie Goode (knee) are out.
Josh Dasilva may replace Shandon Baptiste in central midfield.
Mikkel Damsgaard or Yoane Wissa will join Ivan Toney and Bryan Mbeumo in the front three.
