Reasons why over 10K BECE graduates have not been placed, and no self placement
Following the release of the 2024 school placements for BECE graduates, a total of 10,184 candidates have not been placed in any SHS. These candidates have also been denied the opportunity to use the self-placement module. It is not the first time in the history of the BECE that this has happened. This is an annual event that coincides with the release of the SHS/TVET school placement results.
Candidates in this category are expected to include the following students:
Below are the reasons why over 10,000 BECE graduates have not been placed, and no self placement
The West African Examination Council has withheld their results.
All candidates and schools whose results were withheld by WAEC and investigations into their alleged examination malpractices have not been completed at the time of school placements will not be placed in any school.
BECE candidates who failed in either English language or mathematics
While the cutoff point for placement seems to have been eliminated, the grade you obtain in your English Language and Mathematics at the BECE can place a prohibition on your placement. For those who scored grade 9 in either mathematics or English language or both, the CSSPS portal will not place you in any school even if you obtained grade 1 in the remaining 8 subjects.
Candidates who did not report for the entire exam or some core subjects.
It is also likely that some of the candidates who make up the 10,184 candidates include those who registered for the examination but did not turn up to take the exams at all.
If the subjects you were absent for include any of the core subjects, then the chances that you will not be placed are very high. Every placement starts with the four core subjects. If you do not have them, you are not likely to be placed.
If a candidate falls within any of the categories identified above, he or she will not have the option of being able to use the self-placement model. He or she will also not be placed.
What are the options available to such students?
- Parents may have to look for private schools for such candidates. There is no way they can gain admission into public SHS unless through protocol.
- For BECE candidates whose results are still being reviewed by WAEC, should the council finally release their results, the chances of them being placed by the Ministry of Education are higher. However, this may take forever.
- Again, those who did not pass in English and Mathematics would have to resit those papers during the 2025 BECE and also pass the two subjects to qualify for placement into public SHS if they so wished.

In a related development, the Ghana Education Service has indicated that all first-year students are 2024 BC graduates and are expected to report to school on 7th November 2024 to start their 2024-2025 academic year.
However, they are expected, with the help of the appearance, to start the admission process on the 30th of October 2024.
Some senior high schools have put in place online admission processes to ensure that parents and their candidates do not have to travel long distances to access the school’s prospectus and other details needed for the start and completion of their registration or admission processes.
This means for parents and candidates is that they can complete their admission processes online using the schools laid out procedures and then report to school on 7th November 2024.
For candidates who have been placed in schools that do not have an online admission portal, they would have to physically be present in such schools with the help of their parents to initiate and complete their enrolment in the senior high school process on the school premises.
Some of the students who scored grade 9 in either mathematics or English language has been placed. So stop giving false information.
