School Feeding caterers demand arrears, storm Gender Ministry (Video)
Barely nine days to the end of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s tenure as president, members of the School Feeding Caterers Association, employed under this government, are demanding the payment of arrears owed them.
The group stormed the offices of the Controller and Accountant General and the Gender Ministry to demand the unpaid arrears.
The caterers from Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Eastern Regions converged at the two ministries early on the morning of Monday, 30th December 2024, to demand the release of their funds.
There is agitation among the school feeding caterers, who fear their locked-up funds will not be paid if the next government takes over.
Journalists who visited the scene of the demonstration revealed that the caterers were owed arrears for at least two terms: the third term of the 2023-2024 academic year and the first term of the 2024-2025 academic year.
The angry caterers also demanded their full outstanding payments, dating back to 2017 and 2018.
Failure by the government to pay these funds may affect the feeding of school children when public schools, where feeding is offered, reopen on 8th January 2025 for the second term of the 2024-2025 academic year.
The angry demonstrators disclosed that they were members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who were awarded the School Feeding Caterers contracts by the Nana Addo-led government. They also expressed fears that the government transition might affect their jobs and unpaid arrears, which is why their frustrations have led to the ongoing demonstrations.
The school feeding caterers who stormed the Gender Ministry to demand arrears have also vowed not to return to their respective homes until their debts are settled by the outgoing government before 7th January 2025.
