The Jan 7 presidential inauguration sitting and security arrangement have started at Independence Square. Clearly,  all is set for the inauguration of President-Elect John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Elect Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the Black Star Square in Accra. 

The planning committee has announced sitting and security arrangements for the event.

Event layout and security

The Black Star Square will be divided into three zones on 7th January for event and security reasons.

  • Zone 1: Parliamentary Sitting Area – This area will be restricted to invited guests, with access granted only upon presentation of an invitation card.
  • Zone 2: Public Stands – The stands will be open to the public, with adequate security and safety measures in place. Large LED screens will be installed to allow more people to watch the proceedings.
  • Zone 3: Media Area – A designated area has been reserved for accredited journalists, with necessary facilities provided to support their work.

Traffic and parking arrangements

Several roads in Accra will be temporarily closed to facilitate the event. Motorists are advised to note the following arrangements:

Road Closures: 28th February Road, Osu Cemetery Traffic Light, Castle Road, and Starlet 91 Road will be closed.

  • Diverted Routes: Traffic will be diverted to alternative routes, including Salem Avenue, Oxford Street, and Liberia Road.
  • Car Parks: Designated car parks have been allocated, including the back of the Independence Arch, Forecourt of the State House, and Access Bank Car Park.

International participation

Ten heads of state, two vice presidents, one speaker of parliament, two former presidents, and several heads of international organizations have confirmed their participation in the inauguration ceremony.

Media Accreditation

Over 700 applications for media accreditation have been received, with accredited journalists granted access to designated areas. A clean feed will be provided to all TV stations and channels for centralized TV production.
