SHS1 Students Report Today as 2026/2027 Academic Year Officially Begins. The long-awaited moment has finally arrived. Thousands of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates across Ghana are beginning their transition into Senior High School as the 2026/2027 academic year officially opens today, Friday, September 18, 2026.

The approved academic calendar sets September 18, 2026 as the reopening date for SHS and Senior High Technical School students under the new academic year. The calendar covers both Single Track and Transitional schools, with different arrangements for Forms One, Two and Three.

This means parents and guardians should now focus on ensuring that newly placed students report to their assigned schools, complete the required admission processes and settle into their new academic environment.

SHS 2026/2027 Academic Calendar: What Students Must Know

The official calendar shows that Single Track Form One and Form Two students will begin their first semester on September 18, 2026.

Their first semester will run until January 29, 2027, after which students will go on vacation from January 30 to March 29, 2027.

The second semester will then begin on March 30, 2027, and run until July 30, 2027. The academic year will end with vacation beginning on July 31, 2027.

This arrangement gives Single Track Form One and Form Two students a clearly defined academic year extending from September 2026 into July 2027.

Form Three Students Have a Different Calendar

The academic calendar for Single Track Form Three students is shorter because of their final-year responsibilities and the WASSCE schedule.

Form Three students will begin their first semester on September 18, 2026, and continue until December 18, 2026.

The Christmas vacation will run from December 19, 2026, to January 31, 2027.

Students will return for the second semester on February 1, 2027, with the academic period scheduled to end on June 18, 2027.

The calendar therefore places the major academic activities of Form Three students within a schedule that leads into the 2027 WASSCE period.

Transitional Schools Follow a Different Arrangement

Parents whose children have been placed in Transitional schools should pay particular attention because their academic calendar is not the same as that of Single Track schools.

For Transitional Form One students, the first school-based semester runs from September 18 to November 13, 2026.

This will be followed by an online-at-home period from November 16 to December 18, 2026.

Students will then have a break from December 19, 2026, to February 7, 2027, before returning to school from February 8 to April 14, 2027.

The second semester is scheduled for May 25 to June 20, 2027.

Parents should therefore avoid assuming that all SHS1 students will follow exactly the same school attendance pattern throughout the 2026/2027 academic year.

Transitional Form Two Students Also Have a Special Schedule

For Transitional Form Two students, the first semester is scheduled from November 16, 2026, to February 5, 2027.

Students will then undertake an online-at-home period from February 8 to March 5, 2027.

Their second semester is scheduled to run from March 6 to April 18, 2027.

The calendar also identifies a mid-semester break from June 17 to June 20, 2027, for Form Two students.

Christmas and Easter Breaks

The approved calendar also identifies important general breaks that parents and students should keep in mind.

The Christmas break is scheduled for December 19, 2026, to January 4, 2027.

The Easter break is scheduled for March 25 to March 30, 2027.

The calendar also indicates the 2027 WASSCE period from April 6 to June 18, 2027.

These dates are particularly important for Form Three students, parents and schools as they prepare for the final examination year.

Parents Should Follow Their School’s Reporting Instructions

Although September 18 is the official reopening date shown on the academic calendar, parents should follow the specific reporting and admission instructions communicated by their child’s school.

Students who have received placement should arrive with the required admission and placement documents and the items specified by their school.

Boarding students should pay particular attention to the school’s prospectus and ensure that required personal and academic materials are ready before reporting.

Parents should also avoid relying on unofficial social media posts when there is a conflict over reporting arrangements. The Ghana Education Service remains responsible for implementing approved national policies and administering pre-tertiary education across Ghana.

A New Chapter Begins for SHS1 Students

For thousands of new SHS students, today marks the beginning of an important three-year educational journey.

The transition from JHS to SHS brings a different academic environment, new subjects, new expectations and greater responsibility. Students will need to develop stronger study habits and learn to manage their time effectively from the beginning.

The first weeks should therefore be treated as an important adjustment period. Students should pay attention to school rules, understand their academic programmes and establish good study routines early.

Parents also have an important role to play. Even after their children report to school, regular encouragement, communication and interest in their academic progress can make the transition easier.
