The Ghana Education Service had indicated in the wake of the introduction of the Free SHS that no public second cycle school shall collect unapproved fees. One of these unapproved fees was PTA dues.
SHSs collecting PTA dues and punitive actions to be taken by GES
The management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has said headteachers found to have broken the law (directive) will at least be transferred.
This action will be taken if there is proof that any headmaster or headmistress of a Senior High School (SHS) was extorting monies, describe as PTA dues from prospective students.
Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa called on parents to report any approved fees being charged in any public senior high school for action.
“For the PTA dues, we have not said parents should not pay but what we are saying is there shouldn’t be any fixed amount to be paid to the extent that students who owe will be sacked from the classroom,” the GES staff stated.

Not long ago this portal report on the charging of approved fees dubbed “Teacher motivation” in some secondary schools.
While providing answers to questions during the interview, Prof. Opoku-Amankwa added that “students are not part of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) so if a student parent has not paid the dues you don’t have to sack the child from the classroom.”
Parent-Teacher Association has made frantic efforts to get the government to lift the ban on the payment of PTA dues for the past three years. The effort has yielded no positive results.

Headteachers found to have acted contrary to the GES directive, thus SHSs collecting PTA dues will have their Headmaster or mistress transferred to a far place where service is needed to serve the country, he added.
