SIM re-registration date extension coming – Projection
From all indications, a SIM re-registration date extension is more possible than the deactivation of SIMs used by Ghanaians as threatened by the Minister
With the mad rush for Ghana Card as the SIM re-registration date of 31st July looms, it is obvious that the Ministry of Communication and Digitalization is stressing Ghanaians for nothing when the single most important requirement, the Ghana card, has not been made available to many who had registered for it.
Instead of giving Ghanaians a period within which to register their SIMs, it would be prudent that the government will rather give the National Identification Authority a time period within which to register all Ghanaians so that no one will have a valid excuse for not being able to link their Ghana Card to their SIM.
Going ahead to infamously deactivate or block SIMs will amount to the government punishing the citizens for no fault of theirs. The government will lose a lot of revenue from diverse sources which are connected to the SIM and would become unpopular if it decides to deactivate unregistered SIMs.
The government of Ghana will lose when it comes to its revenue mobilization efforts of the government through the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). If the government’s arrogant posture overtakes common sense, four (4) key government revenue policies: E-Levy, Communications Service Tax (CST), GETFUND/NHIL, and VAT.
The Minister of Communications and Digitalization, Madam Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, served notice that the deadline remains July 31.
Ningo Prampram Member of Parliament Samuel Nartey George has said the decision by the government not to extend the deadline for the SIM re-registration is mere talk the government will extend the deadline for SIM re-registration.
While speaking to TV3’s 3news in an interview on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday, July 30, Sam George said “What she said in Kumasi is just talk, it is not true, she will extend it.”
Sam George further noted that some persons are unable to link their Ghana Card to the SIM. When they attempt to do, they receive an invalid input notification, a problem he said is due to system inefficiency.
When the registration started, the last day for registering SIM cards was It was 31st March, as of 17th March 2022 some 14,091,542 SIM Cards have been linked to the Ghana Card, 10,348,532 Bio-Captures conducted and 99,445 New SIMS registered. But there were more Ghanaians who had no Ghana Card to register, hence it was extended to 31st July.
With the queues in town, the lack of access to Ghana cards even after registering, and the other bottlenecks, we project that the SIM re-registration date will be extended for “A broke but wise government will not block SIMs after 31st July”
