Ghanaians are calling for the SIM Re-registration extension by the Ministry of Communication and Digitalization. The Ministry led by its Minister, Madam Ursula Owusu-Ekufu has taken an entrenched position not to extend the registration date. It would be prudent that the government and the ministry consider these logical and ethical reasons valid enough to compel them to postpone the closing date. We have projected that the SIM re-registration date extension will happen but here are reasons why the SIM Re-registration extension is needed.
SIM Re-registration extension: 5 reasons why it must be extended
- It will ensure the government does not lose out in its revenue mobilization.
- It will ensure that government’s (4) key government revenue policies: E-Levy, Communications Service Tax (CST), GETFUND/NHIL, and VAT are not negatively affected.
- The NIA has failed to provide Ghanaians with their Ghana Cards and even some of those who have registered for the card are yet to receive it, making it no fault of theirs.
- The government’s own NIA inefficiency is the cause of the current challenges confronting the SIM re-registration, hence, there is no need to deactivate those who are yet to complete the process.
- There is the need to allow others to register without them suffering any blocking of their SIMs. Should this happen, it will affect the goodwill of the ruling government in the minds and eyes of ordinary Ghanaians. They will see the government as not caring. This is something the government will want to avoid.

The SIM Re-registration exercise should be a continuous process and should not burden Ghanaians with frustrating closing dates. Given the above reasons, the SIM Re-registration extension is needed. An extension to March 2023 would be idle. Citizens and the government must be interested in a decision that will create w win-win outcome rather than its current unfavourable posture.
To avoid the long queues at the offices of telcos, they should adopt an online appointment system to schedule applicants for the completion of the process. The NIA should also do the same thing and revert to printing the Ghana Card instantly, which can be done.
