SOCO Projects Set to Drive Development – Bawumia
Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has heralded the commencement of the Social Cohesion Projects (SOCO), emphasizing that these initiatives will act as a catalyst for infrastructural development in operational areas. The SOCO project, which was ceremoniously launched by Vice President Bawumia in Yendi, is poised to implement 582 sub-projects across six regions under the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) initiative.
Funded through a substantial $150 million World Bank facility secured by the Government, this project aims to deliver robust community infrastructure and assets through a Community-Driven Development approach (CDD). The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development (MLGDR) is overseeing the implementation of the project in 48 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) spanning the Northern, North East, Upper East, Upper West, Savannah, and Oti Regions.
Vice President Bawumia emphasized that the project’s impact would be multifaceted, contributing to conflict prevention in the Sahel region, reducing vulnerability to climate change, strengthening local institutions, enhancing economic opportunities, fostering public trust, and promoting regional dialogue among Gulf of Guinea countries.

The project is set to benefit eight MMDAs in the Northern Region, 15 in the Upper East Region, 11 in the Upper West Region, six in the North East Region, and four in the Oti Regions. These peaceful communities are poised to benefit from various projects, including roads, schools, and other critical infrastructures.
Vice President Bawumia underscored that 2023 marks the commencement of phase one of the SOCO project, which will involve training women and youth and creating employment opportunities within the communities. He commended Mr. Daniel Botwe (MP), the Minister for MLGRD, for his relentless efforts in realizing the SOCO project and issued a stern warning against project delays.
In a message delivered on his behalf, Ya-Na Abukari II, the Overlord of Dagbon, expressed optimism that the SOCO project, if well executed, would significantly enhance the livelihoods of the people. He urged project supervisors and consultants to exercise prudence and diligence in their roles. He also stressed the project’s importance in shielding communities from being drawn into conflicts originating in the Sahel regions of West Africa and climate change.
Alhaji Shani Alhassan Shaibu, the Northern Regional Minister, highlighted that the SOCO project aims to finance projects such as schools, market infrastructure, and roads, with the aim of improving the quality of life in the communities. He called on local chiefs to offer their support to the SOCO team in implementing these projects.
Minister Daniel Botwe reiterated that SOCO delivery projects were selected by the communities and would be owned by them. He expressed gratitude to Ya-Na for providing land for the projects and assured him that the projects would be completed as scheduled. He also urged the MMDCES to provide regular updates on the project’s progress to the chiefs.
Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama, MP for Yendi Constituency, extended his thanks to the Government for various ongoing projects in the area, including Yendi town roads, the Yendi to Tatale road, and the SOCO projects, which promise to provide employment opportunities for the youth in the constituency.
