Some men of God ‘begging’ for Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill not to be passed – MP opens up
A surprising revelation on efforts by certain religious leaders to influence the yet-to-be-passed Anti-LGBTQ+ bill has been revealed by Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, the chairman of the Parliamentary Affairs, Constitutional, and Legal Affairs Committee.
In an interview that aired on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, on the morning show ‘Ghana Montie’ on NEAT FM, he said that even religious leaders had presented a paper outlining reasons why the contentious LGBTQ+ bill shouldn’t be passed into law.
It was the unanimous opinion of the pastors that this law ought to be passed. There are arguments for and against it.
Nevertheless, the lawmaker from Asante Akyem Central informed Mac Jerry Osei-Agyemeng that the committee had decided to pass the bill.
Despite the numerous objections, Hon. Anyimadu-Antwi has promised that the anti-LGBTQ+ measure “will be passed very soon.”
The proposed Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill in Ghana has sparked heated debate, both within the country and internationally. The bill, if passed, would criminalize same-sex relationships and impose harsh penalties, including up to three years in jail for same-sex public displays of affection.
Religious Leaders’ Divided Views:
Ghana is a deeply religious country, and the opinions of men of God carry significant weight in public discourse. On the issue of the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, there is no unified stance among religious leaders. Arguments Against the Bill:
- Human rights violation: Critics argue that the bill violates fundamental human rights, including the right to privacy, freedom of expression, and non-discrimination.
- Discrimination: They contend that the bill unfairly targets and marginalizes the LGBTQ+ community.

The Role of Men of God:
Men of God in Ghana play a crucial role in shaping public opinion and influencing policy. Their pronouncements on the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill have the potential to sway public support and influence the outcome of the debate. It is important that religious leaders engage in this conversation with compassion, understanding, and respect for human rights.
Open Dialogue and Respect for Diversity:
The issue of LGBTQ+ rights is complex and sensitive. It is important to have open and respectful dialogue on this issue, taking into account the diverse perspectives within Ghanaian society. Religious leaders can play a vital role in promoting tolerance and understanding, while also upholding their core religious beliefs.
Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to pass the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill lies with the Ghanaian Parliament. It is important that lawmakers carefully consider all sides of the issue and make a decision that is in the best interests of all Ghanaians.
