The inauguration of the 9th Parliament of the 4th Republic has commenced in parliament.
The 9th parliament of Ghana will be sworn in on 7th January 2025 to start the new government of Ghana following the December 7th election.
The 9th Parliament is filled with important statistics and facts worth knowing.
Let us take a careful look at some of these facts.
At the time of this publication, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has secured 183 seats in the new parliament.
There are 120 new members of parliament who were elected across the country. They will be in parliament for the first time. This is expected to bring on board new ideas even as they learn the standing orders and processing of Parliament and its proceedings.
Four independent members of parliament were elected during the December 7th election.

Two constituencies (Ablekum North and Akwetia) have not been declared or have a high court injunction; hence, they will not be sworn in, according to the clerk of parliament. Ablekum North has no elected MP, per the Clerk of Parliament.
The speaker of parliament for the 8th parliament of the 4th republic, Hon. Alban Gbagbin, was nominated and elected by the house. Since there was no other nomination, no voting was conducted. He was declared as elected by the clerk of parliament.
More Statistics and Facts about Ghana’s 9th Parliament
The Member of Parliament for Akatsi South, Bernard Ahiafor, has been elected as the 1st Deputy Speaker of Ghana’s 9th Parliament. His nomination, put forward by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was seconded by the Deputy Minority Leader.
In addition, the Member of Parliament for Fomena, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, has been elected as the 2nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament, a position he has held since January 2021.
Bernard Ahiafor, a seasoned lawmaker from the Volta Region, has represented Akatsi South since 2013. A practicing lawyer, Ahiafor is highly regarded for his expertise in legal matters.
He has served on several key parliamentary committees, including the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee.
