Question:  Jesus used parables to teach his disciples some moral lessons about life and the kingdom of God. Explain any five of these parables. (20 marks)

i. The first parable is “The Parable of the Good Samaritan.”. In this parable, Jesus tells us of a man who is beaten, robbed, and left for dead. A priest and a Levite pass by without helping, but a Samaritan considered an outsider, stops to help and care for the man. This parable teaches about compassion, kindness, and the importance of loving one’s neighbour, regardless of social or ethnic boundaries.

ii. In the Parable of the Prodigal Son, a young man demanded his inheritance early, squandered it, and ended up destitute. He returns home, expecting to be treated as a servant, but his father welcomes him back with open arms and a celebration. This parable illustrates God’s unconditional love and forgiveness, emphasising repentance and reconciliation.

iii. In the Parable of the Sower, a sower scattered seeds, which fell on different types of ground: the path, rocky soil, thorns, and good soil. Only the seeds in good soil grew and bore fruit. This parable explains the different responses to the word of God, highlighting the importance of a receptive and faithful heart to produce spiritual fruit.

iv. In the Parable of the Lost Sheep, a shepherd leaves his ninety-nine sheep to search for one that is lost, rejoicing when he finds it. This parable demonstrates God’s concern for every individual and His joy in the repentance and return of a lost soul.

v. The Parable of the Mustard Seed is the one in which Jesus compared the kingdom of God to a mustard seed, the smallest of seeds, which grows into a large tree that provides shelter for birds. This parable illustrates the growth and expansive nature of God’s kingdom, starting from small beginnings and growing into something great and influential.

vi. The Parable of the Talents is the parable in which a master gave three servants varying amounts of money (talents) before leaving on a journey. Two invest and double their amounts, while the third buries his and returns it without increase. The master rewards the first two and punishes the third. This parable teaches the importance of using one’s gifts and resources responsibly and productively in service to God.

vii. The last but not least is the Parable of the Ten Virgins. The ten virgins waited for a bridegroom, but only five brought enough oil for their lamps. When the bridegroom arrives, the prepared virgins enter the wedding feast, while the unprepared ones are left outside. This parable emphasises the need for readiness and vigilance in anticipation of the kingdom of God, symbolising spiritual preparedness and faithfulness.

The Full 2025 BECE WAEC Press Release for candidates, teachers, schools and candidates have been released.  Below is the full press release.

 

Full 2025 BECE WAEC Press Release

The West African Examinations Council wishes to inform its numerous publics that the Basic Education Certificate Examination for School and Private Candidates will be conducted from Wednesday, June 11, 2025 to Wednesday, June 18, 2025.

A total number of 603,328 candidates, comprising 297,250 males and 306,078 females from 20,395 participating schools entered for the school examination. The number of candidates that registered for this year’s BECE (SC) is 5.99% higher than the 2024 entry figure of 569,236. With regard to the BECE for Private Candidates, a total entry figure of 1,661 candidates was recorded. This is made up of 858 males and 803 females. This year’s figure is 19.49% higher than the 2024 entry figure of 1,390.

The BECE for School Candidates will be conducted at 2,237 examination centres across the country, while fifteen (15) centres mainly in the regional capitals will be used for the BECE for Private candidates.

Similar to the 2024 examination, School Candidates and some of the private candidates will be examined on the core curriculum while other private candidates will be examined on the old syllabus. We wish to notify all prospective private candidates that this will be the last time private candidates will be examined on the old syllabus.

The Council has made reasonable adjustments to make its examinations accessible to candidates with special educational needs. Heads of school, parents and guardians should rest assured that adequate provision has been made to ensure that no child is left behind as far the examination is concerned.

The Council wishes to remind all stakeholders of the revised Rules and Regulations for dealing with cases of irregularity in the Council’s examinations which have been in operation since 2023. The revision includes new rules on:

  • Having inscriptions on any part of the body or clothing
  • Posting Live Questions on the Internet
  • Refusal to grant timely access into the school premises
  • Misconduct of examination officials
  • Multiple registration of candidates in both public and private schools

The revised rules are available on the Council’s website and Heads of school, supervisors and invigilators should ensure that candidates adhere to these new rules.

The Council calls on all and sundry especially stakeholders to ensure that sanity prevails at all the examination centres. While we wish all the candidates success in their examination, we wish to admonish them to adhere strictly to the rules governing the examination. 2026 BECE Home Mock

The West African Examination Council will this year conduct the 2025 BECE for Junior High School candidates based on both the new and old curriculums. This arrangement means that three different sets of candidates will write the 2025 BECE from 9th to 16th June, 2025.

Would the 2025 BECE to be based on the old and new curricula?

Reliable information available to the Ghana Education News portal details the following as the three candidates and the curriculum to be used for each group of candidates.

School candidates, which refers to all candidates being registered by schools, will sit the exam. These candidates are either registered for the 2025 BECE as public school or private school candidates.

The second batch of candidates are all 2024 BECE candidates who failed one or more papers and have registered to resit the examination. These candidates will be administered the same questions that school candidates above will write.

The third and final set of candidates are all former BECE candidates who failed the BECE while the old curriculum was in section. Thus, all candidates who sat the BECE before 2024 and failed can register for the 2025 BECE. Their questions will be set based on the old curriculum. WAEC is expected to continue with this new arrangement until it phases out the BECE resit based on the old curriculum.

Based on the above set of candidates, WAEC has released two official examination timetables for candidates. It has one timetable for 2025 candidates and 2024 BECE candidates who are resitting the exam as private candidates.

The second timetable is for only pre-2024 BECE candidates who want to resit the examination in 2025.

  • The overall quality of essays has improved compared to the previous two mocks.
  • Students who participated in earlier exams are paying closer attention to handwriting, grammar, and spelling. They are also reviewing their essays, as evidenced by corrections and the inclusion of omitted words. These are positive signs of student improvement. Our new candidates, taking the exam for the first time, also made a good impression; however, some essays were shallow and short.

Areas of Concern:

  • Many students who joined the Home Mock in March made significant errors in their essays. Some struggled to differentiate between formal and informal letters, mixing features from both in their attempts to answer formal letter questions. This is a basic question, yet students often deviated from the correct format.

  • In formal letters, students should not inquire about the recipient’s well-being. Candidates must thoroughly understand the features of formal letters, accurately identify a formal letter question, and apply only formal letter features in their responses.

  • Poor point introduction sentences were used, negatively impacting scores. Sentences like “Another is education” or “Secondly, Education” are unacceptable for an English Essay at the BECE. Introductions should clearly present the paragraph’s theme. For example: “Another cause of flooding in our community is the lack of education on the negative impact of improper refuse disposal.”

  • Students should avoid excessively lengthy paragraphs. Paragraphs exceeding six lines are discouraged. Essays are best written with concise paragraphs of no more than six lines. Candidates should be direct and avoid unnecessary elaborations in formal letters, as these waste time and do not improve scores.

  • Students should refrain from defining terms in formal letters and proceed directly to the relevant facts. Some candidates lost focus in their introductions by defining flooding, in addition to asking about the director of education’s well being. This is unnecessary.

  • Another misplaced feature observed in formal letters is writing full names before the signature. The subscription should follow this format:

    • Yours faithfully,
    • (Signature here)
    • John Gammar (Full Names)
    • Compound Overseer (Title or position, if any)
  • Students who answered question 3 (essay) generally performed well, but many failed to:

    • Provide clear, concise titles of no more than ten words.
    • They did not avoid over-elaboration while explaining points.
    • Keep paragraphs short.

Those who answered question three (Article question) did not writer’s name, school, etc., immediately after the essay. Less than 5% of students who answered this question did this correctly. Students must review the features of this essay type.

  • Date writing challenge:

    Some students are confused about how and where to write the date in an essay. Students who answered the informal letter question (Q1) wrote the date under the writer’s address and repeated it under the recipient’s address. This is incorrect. Those who used the slanted address often failed to align the date with the first letter of the first address line. This alone results in a loss of ½ mark, and more marks are lost if punctuation is incorrect.

  • Salutation:

    Some candidates incorrectly wrote formal letters without a title and placed the salutation in the wrong location, such as above the recipient’s address.

  • Comprehension:

    Providing multiple answers for underlined words is detrimental. Examiners will award zero if one of the provided answers is incorrect. Students should take note and avoid this.

  • Failure to brainstorm:

    Examiners have observed that candidates who scored below 25/30 on their chosen essay failed to brainstorm the question beforehand. A quick brainstorm should address key questions for each essay question at the BECE.
