2025 BECE Grading System and Pass Mark

GES Introduces Vacation Classes For 2024 BECE Candidates

Let’s take a look at the 2025 BECE grading system and the pass mark likely to be used as preperation goes on for the BECE scheduled for June 9-16, 2025. Students who want to make good grades and raw scores must target an average score of 70/100 for each subject. This requres a minimum of 30/40 in objective tests and a minimum of 40/60 in the subjective test. The higher the scores the better. Keep this in mind.

What Is The 2025 BECE Grading System?

The BECE is both for certification and selection into Senior High Schools and Technical Institutes in Ghana. The 2025 BECE grading system has been designed in a way that there is nothing like ‘Fail’ on the result slip of candidates. Unlike the WASSCE, which shows ‘FAIL’ for marks less than 35, the BECE shows the LOWEST grade. This clearly means that there is nothing like fail in BECE.

However, this doesn’t mean that candidates should not learn. Any candidates who fail to get the best grades will not get admission into any senior high school in Ghana. The best option for these candidates is to write the BECE (Private Candidate), also known as BECE NOVDEC.

NB: WAEC sometimes uses the Stanine grading system for BECE. It is norm-referenced, meaning the result’s architecture is pre-determined. Under Stanine, the % of candidates who will obtain Grade 1-9 is virtually fixed, so you must justify your inclusion into that percentage.

5 Months To 2025 BECE: Students and Teachers Exam-Passing Tips

implementing these student and teacher exam passing tips Download 2024 BECE Mock Exams Questions Here 5 Months To 2025 BECE: Students and Teachers Exam-Passing Tips

The 2025 BECE is slated for June, and this is just five months away since the exam will surely happen in week two of June. Every stakeholder must start learning or teaching candidates the right exam-passing tips to help students get very prepared for the exam.

What Are the Students and Teachers Exam-Passing Tips for 2025 BECE

Schools, in particular, need to answer the question of what teacher-motivating strategies they have instituted to empower and encourage educators to work extra hard to prepare candidates.

Teachers’ passion to see their students excel at BECE drives them, but we must not ignore their financial and non-financial motivations. To reward teachers for their hard work, schools must find smart ways to challenge them.

Imagine that, as a school owner or head teacher, you get the management and directors of your school to just reward each teacher preparing the BECE candidates with an extra GHS150.00 each of the next five months for their effort towards preparing your candidates.

You will indirectly be investing in hard work, dedication from your educators, and extra commitment to the school’s BECE 2025 target.

In the last five months of BECE, schools must not be interested in only tightening the supervision of teachers to drain them of all the energy and zeal they have for good results without compensating them in ways that will make these teachers feel super special and valued.

Teachers must start a question-and-answer revision.

With five months until the 2025 BECE, teachers must wrap up the teaching and learning of topics by the end of the second term. For schools and teachers that planned their Saturday classes. This should be the case. Once this is achieved, teachers must change their approach to teaching and revision to a new approach that uses questions and answers, topic by topic. This question-and-answer approach will ensure that students are able to match their knowledge to the kinds of questions they are likely to be assessed in the final examination. For instance, teachers can set several section B questions on topics studied and use the topics to revise with their students.

This is the time to start reinforcing questions and strongly answering skills as a teacher and school. While being strong in mastering the question-answering skills and applying them, the students must be guided to answer questions in a step-by-step manner. The more your students do this, the better they become at their question-answering approach. Introduce your students to different question types and keywords used in questions, and teach them how to approach such questions.

Use critical thinking questions.

Do not forget that the 2025 BECE is expected to be full of critical thinking and practical questions. You can direct questions to these types of questions and help your students know how to approach or answer them.

Teachers and their students work hand in hand to set subject-based targets. For instance, the science teacher can agree with his or her students individually as to what their worst grades should be. Once this is agreed upon, the two must work hard together as a team and as a class.

Teach objective test-answering skills.

Very often, students who pass the BECE start showing signs of brilliance from the results they opt for in Section A, which is the objective test paper. Teachers and their students should master the act and skills of answering objective test questions. How to choose answers smartly, even if your knowledge is low on a given topic or question, can help you do better.

Teach and learn subjective test-answering skills.

Teachers and students should work towards improving how they write answers, the arrangement of facts as answers, and their poor handwriting. Even if a student has poor handwriting, careful writing of the answers can make all the difference.

Students must intensify their personal studies and work with their schedules. Such timetables will work well and help the candidates if they are created taking into account the subjects they have challenges with. Thus, allocate more time to subjects you are struggling with.

Get students extra support or help.

Parents, on the other hand, need to provide emotional support to their candidates and keep in touch with their teachers. If a student is struggling with subjects such as mathematics and integrated science, parents who can afford them should look for extra tuition teachers who will come in to polish and prepare the candidate for the examination. Extra support in the next 100 days can change the fortunes of a student and get him or her ready for the BECE.

2025 BECE English Language Mock – Reading and Comprehension

4. Read the following passage carefully and answer all the questions that follow.
Despite the fact that the planet is habitable only because most of it is composed of water, it is the oceans that are the most immediately threatened part of the earth.
It was in the oceans that life first began to stir, shielded by the waters from the sun’s irresistible radiation. It was from the oceans that plants and animals emerged to colonize the land surface of the planet. It is the oceans today that provide the water vapour which, drawn up by the sun, falls upon the earth in harvest-bringing, life- sustaining rain. The ocean is a major provider of the oxygen released by its plankton for the benefit of all species of land, air and sea- breathing with lungs and gills. Without special qualities for holding heat, much of the earth would be uninhabitable.

The oceans are the coolants of the tropics, the bringers of warm currents to cold regions, the universal moderators of temperature throughout the globe. The oceans are also indispensable to man because the first created the worldwide currents of seaborne trade which have steadily drawn our planet into a single economic system. They still produce, for the earth’s rising population, a vast harvest of indispensable protein. In 1969, sixty three million metric tons of fish came from the sea, estimated to be only approximately one-fifth of the ocean’s production.

Fish, if turned directly to human use, could make up large part of the protein diet required for the world’s children, especially those in developing countries, at a very low cost. But, in one of the world economy’s most unacceptable diversions of resources, fifty percent f the harvest from the ocean is converted to fish meal which today ends up feeding pigs and chickens in developed countries. It is very sad that ‘developed’ animal pets have the chance of a better diet than very many ‘developing’ babies.

a. Why are the oceans considered vital for making the Earth habitable?
b. How do the oceans contribute to the Earth’s rainfall?
c. What role do plankton in the oceans play for living organisms?
d. How do the oceans help regulate the Earth’s temperature?
e. Explain in your own words, the following expressions used in the passage.
i. throughout the globe
ii. coolants of the tropics
iii. shielded by the waters
f. For each of the following words, give another word or phrase that means the same and can fit into the passage.
i. despite
ii. irresistible
iii. diversions
iv. approximately
g. In one sentence not more than ten words, summarize how man misuses the ocean’s resources.

Everything about 2025 BECE you need to know

Teachers Jailed Over 2025 BECE Exam Leaks

Everything you need to know about the 2025 BECE examination, from the examination date to the timetable to the registration phases, has been covered here.

2025 is here, and it is another examination year for Junior High School students preparing for the 2025 BECE to be administered by WAEC. Ahead of the examination processes to be initiated by WAEC, the Ghana Education News portal details all the facts you need to know about the 2025 BECE.

Since 2024, WAEC has changed the way questions are asked. It has also introduced a serialized question system for objective test questions.

Everything about 2025 BECE: What is the BECE in Ghana?

The BECE is an acronym for Basic Education Certificate Examination. This is an annual examination conducted by WAEC for Junior High School students in their final year.

The 2025 BECE will be the 35th exam, and the first exam was administered in 1990.

What curriculum will be used by WAEC?

The 2025 BECE will be the second to be administered by WAEC based on the 2019 Common Core Curriculum released by NaCCA, but in all, it will be the 35th BECE.

Who can sit the BECE in Ghana?

Originally, the BECE was for only students who had gone through 9 years of basic education and were in basic 9. However, over the years, students in Basic 7 and 8 have been registered for the exam only to come out on top with good grades. This development is not expected to change. Schools and parents with brilliant students in Basic 8 are likely to give these prodigies the chance to write the BECE ahead of their colleagues.

Junior High Schools (JHS) with brilliant students in basic 9 should keep an eye on their students so they are not snatched or also register such students to get the best out of them since there are no official rules against the registration of such students.

What is the 2025 BECE exam date? When will the 2025 BECE be written?

Our projection before January 2025:

At the time of this publication, WAEC had not released any official communication on the 2025 BECE exam date; however, based on WAEC’s past timetables and month, Ghana Education News can confidently project with a 99% confidence level that, barring any other last-minute changes, the 2025 BECE will be administered from Monday, 9th June, 2025, to Monday, 16th June, 2025.

WAEC approved the BECE date released on 24th January 2025 by GES

The above was our projection earlier. The Ghana Education Service press release on the 2025 BECE has confirmed the date above. The BECE will indeed take place in June from 9th to 16th June 2025 for school candidates.

What is the 2025 BECE timetable likely to look like?

BECE resit and private candidates

Every year WAEC also organizes a resit BECE for candidates who failed in previous examinations. In 2025 WAEC is likely to organise to separate BECE resit examinations along with the exam for school candidates at the same time.

Those who failed the 2024 BECE will have to resit the exam but their questions must come from the new curriculum. These candidates will end up answering the same questions to be used to assess school candidates.

Those who failed the BECE before the 2024 exam will have to be assessed with questions based on the old curriculum. WAEC will have to give further details on these issues.

This post has covered everything about the 2025 BECE you need to know to help you plan.

2025 BECE Grading System Table

The 2025 BECE will not be graded differently from the 2024. Schools and teachers are to challenge their learners to target grade 1 at all times during preparations. Let us look at the grading system below.

Students, parents and teachers must work hard and target grade one in all subjects. Students with better chance of excelling must consistently do well in their mock examinations. Teachers and learners must revise all questions students did not choose in the mocks and all others not well answered to help students update their knowledge and get ready for the BECE.

Raw scores to target for school placement after 2025 BECE

For students to get placed in “better” schools, such as grade A and B schools, they need to obtain raw scores within a range. In all, students will write a maximum of 10 subjects. Since each subject is scored over 100%, that adds up to a total score of 1000. However, candidates raw scores are calculated using the raw scores of 6 subjects. The six subjects are all four core subjects and raw scores from the two best subjects from the other six subjects.

The raw scores from the six subjects are scored over 600.

Students who want to be placed in grade A schools must be targeting not less than 420/600 to stand a chance in the competitive placing of students.  This means such a student must at least obtain a grade of 66.67 in each of the subjects taken. The higher the grades the better your chances of being placed.

Do not forget that, every year there are students who obtain 500/600 and your 2025 BECE candidate will be competing with them for placement. Help your ward to study and get ready for the BECE if you are targeting category A schools in the school placement.

Category B schools, students must target between 350 and 419 out of 600. While lower raw scores may secure a grade B or A school, the higher your raw score, the easier it is to get placed no matter the competion. The aggregate obtained by a student may become irrelevant if the raw scores are used.

Basic Tips For Students Who Want To Pass the 2025 BECE

  1. Engage in active study activities when revising or learning for the exam. This simply means that you should not just be reading your books and notes. Instead, make sure you engage with the book by writing out and explaining the things you read and solving past questions. Do all the things you will typically do in an exam and train yourself to do them as part of your preparation.
  2. Read and understand questions before you answer them.
  3. Brainstorm questions and plan the answers.
  4. Teach your friends what you learn. It is a great way to test your understanding of the things you have learnt.
