TEMASCO wins inter-school ECOWAS debate contest

Tema Senior High School (TEMASCO) wins inter-school ECOWAS debate contest.  The school emerged as the champion of the inter-school debate competition on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The debate competition, among six senior high schools in Accra, witnessed TEMASCO coming out triumphantly after they gained a score of 402, leading Ebenezer Senior High School (SHS), which achieved a score of 360 in the final competition.

The contest, organised at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in Accra, witnessed an exciting and tough debate in the first round among schools on a variety of fascinating topics. The third inter-school debate competition was held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the ECOWAS.

The contest, which was centred on the theme “Stronger together, for a brighter future”, was arranged by the MFA in partnership with the Ghana Education Service (GES).  It was focused at intensifying the consciousness of the youth and the understanding of the regional bloc’s part in regional combination, motivating and including the youth in the regional bloc’s matters.

Primary competitions, In the first contest, Labone SHS who scored 320 lost to St John’s Grammar SHS who achieved a score of 365.5 points, while in the second contest, St. Thomas Aquinas SHS achieved 376 to beat Accra Wesley Girls, who scored 329 points. For the third contest, Ebenezer SHS was beaten with just little ppints, TEMASCO in a seriously contested debate, obtaining 379 points to kick out their competitors with just one point. TEMASCO achieved a score of 378 points.

With regards to the points achieved by the six schools in their various contests, a grand finale was between Ebenezer SHS and TEMASCO on the topic “ECOWAS is still strong despite the departure of the three Alliance des États du Sahel (AES) countries (Yes) or No, ECOWAS is powerful and better with the readmittance of the three AES countries,” which witnessed the latter winning and victorious.

The school that became victorious, TEMASCO, was awarded a cash sum of GH¢4,000.00 and an extra donation of GH¢10,000.00 from the ECOWAS Resident Representative to Ghana, Mohammed Lawan Gana. For attaining second, Ebenezer SHS received a cash sum of GH₵3,500, while St. Thomas Aquinas SHS, which finished third drawn from its general execution in the primary rounds, was awarded GH₵3,000. Also, St John’s Grammar, Accra Wesley Girls’, and Labone SHS each took home GH¢2,000. All schools that participated were granted souvenirs, citations, and certificates.
