The Chief Examiner Has A Message For BECE Candidates Writing English

The Chief Examiner Has A Message For BECE Candidates Writing English. Passing English Language is one of the important requirements Senior High Schools look up to before giving admissions to candidates. The general performance of students in the English Language course, over the years, is average. He has noted the weakness of students over the years. He has a message for all candidates who will take the English paper. Candidates who wrote in the year 2017 are the basis of this observation.

Candidates must take note that, these devices should have been put into practice right from the moment they started their Form 3 journey till now. That notwithstanding, candidates must place this in the back of their minds; It Is Never Too Late For Anything

The Chief Examiner says candidates must read good storybooks
This was what he said exactly; “Students should be assisted to cultivate the habit of reading good story books: not only for pleasure but also to identify and make use of literary devices used in the stories.” In this case, candidates must read their Cockcrow books. I also suggest that candidates must read sample composition texts from good recommended textbooks.
2. The Chief Examiner also says candidates must take more composition exercise
“Also, there should be an organized and structured system of writing exercises aimed at equipping students with good writing skills”. It is never too late for candidates to write essays each day to their English tutors for corrections of errors.
3. The Chief Examiner says students must read books that can increase their knowledge of idiomatic expressions.
“Students should be encouraged to do supplementary readings both in and out of the classroom environment. Materials such as novels, library books, newspapers, comics, etc could be of help. Nothing short of this can produce the proficiency in the use of idiomatic standard English that we expect from candidates at this level.”

4. The Chief Examiner says candidates must partake in quizzes
“Candidates should also be able to partake in quizzes, debates, spelling bees, to sharpen their linguistic capabilities”. Once again, candidates can organize group discussions where they quiz themselves. This is because it is impossible for candidates to partake in quizzes within this short time.
