One of the main worries of Ghanaians now is the constant depreciation of the Ghanaian currency, Cedi, in the foreign exchange market. Now, it seems that those in charge of maintaining the external balance, have lost control of the management of the exchange rate. And as Bawumia said, “If the fundamentals are weak, the exchange rate will expose you”. From the horse’s own mouth, our fundamentals are weak. Not long ago, the Finance Minister assured Ghanaians that the exchange rate would stabilize and that Ghanaians must not panic. He said that with very calm composure. The Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, also made a similar claim some months ago. Yet, what do we see? A daily appreciation of the dollar against the Cedi and vice versa.
This situation cannot be reversed unless these things are done
- The “solid” Economic Management Team is collapsed
- The President must appoint a new competent Finance Minister
- The government must enforce a fixed exchange regime within the shortest possible time despite its disadvantages.
