Tina Turner: 5 Best Songs And The Stories Behind Them
Listen to some best songs of the late Tina Turner who died at the age of 83. These best songs of Tina Turner are inspirational.
The songs follow her from her unhappy marriage with her first husband Ike to her 1980s comeback thanks to a British synth pop group.
Here are some of her most popular and well-known songs.
1. River Deep, Mountain High (1966)
Tina found success with Ike in 1960, and six years later, producer Phil Spector asked her to collaborate on one of pop music’s masterpieces.
Despite the fact that the song was credited to the duo, Spector didn’t want Ike in the studio, and Tina was content to work with someone else.
She was taken aback when she discovered that the producer had assembled a full orchestra and choir to create his famous wall of sound. “I was just a girl from Tennessee who got caught up with Ike and became a singer,” she explained in her autobiography. “I’d never seen anything like this except in a movie.”
2. Proud Mary (1971)
After Credence Clearwater Revival’s hit with this song in 1969, Ike and Tina transformed their unhurried country-rock vibe into an explosive and epic funk ode to freedom.
This one made an impression on US music fans, beginning with her sultry spoken introduction and then bursting into life with her exuberant vocals. It peaked at number four on the Billboard chart and was nominated for a Grammy Award.
This was the song Beyonce chose to perform as a tribute to Tina at the 2005 Kennedy Centre Honours. Three years later, they performed it as a duet at the Grammy Awards.
3. Nutbush City Limits (1973)
“A church house, gin house/a school house, outhouse” – Tina famously immortalised her Tennessee hometown in these lyrics.
The upbeat tune was a reminiscence of her chaotic childhood, when she spent some time picking cotton. “You go to the field on weekdays/And you have a picnic on Labour Day.”
Tina left Ike three years later after years of abuse, putting her career in jeopardy.
4. Let’s Stay Together (1983)
Tina had to rebuild herself as a solo artist from the ground up. The meeting of two members of the English electro-pop group Heaven 17 was a watershed moment in her comeback, leading to even greater success than before.
Martyn Ware and Glenn Gregory were looking for one more singer for their British Electric Foundation project, an album of cover versions, and Tina didn’t have a record deal.
There were no other musicians present when she walked into Abbey Road Studios. “Where’s the band?” she inquired, anticipating a Phil Spector-style orchestra. Synthesizers were used to create the music instead.
5. What’s Love Got to Do With It (1984)
She established herself as a solo artist with this song, written by Terry Britten and Graham Lyle and previously offered to Sir Cliff Richard, Donna Summer, and Bucks Fizz. Tina didn’t like it at first, saying it was too light and poppy.
However, she agreed to record it if she could do it “forcefully, with gravity, and raw emotion.” It worked: Turner’s sexy, defiant rendition, accompanied by a music video of her striding through New York streets in denim and black leather, gave her her only US solo number one and won record of the year at the Grammys.
It also made her the oldest woman (at the time) to have a number one single in the United States at the age of 44.
