Top Five Most Popular SHS Programmes

There are over ten programmes which are offered in the senior high schools(SHS) in Ghana. Let’s take a look at the top five most popular programmes.

1. General Arts

The General Arts Programme offered in most senior high schools in Ghana is undoubtedly the most offered programme at the secondary level. It is a designed programme that involves the study of Literature In English, French, Economics , Geography, History, Government, Christian Religuos Studies , Twi etc. General Arts as a programme also involves the study and application of technology (ICT in general) and Physical Education (PE)

Most students prefer this program because of its popularity and also getting a job after this program is quite easy. Courses offered in this program may include Government, CRS, French, Geography, Elective Maths and many more.

2. Home Economics

This is often referred to us ladies program. This is because over 95% of students under this program are girls. It is the second most popular SHS programme.  Some courses offered under this programme include; Management in living, Food and nutrition, General knowledge in arts, Textile, Economics, French, Economics and Biology

3. Business

The second most popular program in the senior high school and the top most popular program in the tertiary level. Courses offered in this program may include,

• Clerical Office Duties – COD
• French

4. General Science

One of the most popular programs in the senior high schools. SHS General Science Programme is a designed programme that involves the study of the natural phenomenon through a systematic approach of science: hypothesis, experiments, observation, and arriving at some logical conclusions. Courses offered under this programme include, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Elective Mathematics, Geography, Elective ICT.

5. Visual Arts

This is a very practical program and it is very entertaining. You should give your ward a chance to pursue this program. Visual Arts Involve various art forms including painting, textiles, ceramics, sculpture, graphic designing and more.
