UK declares US University Graduates as High Potential Individuals

The United Kingdom has declared graduates from 20 US universities as High Potential Individuals who qualify to seek employment in the UK. What this means is that the UK government is ready to provide students and potential work seeking graduates from the top 20 universities in the US an opportunity to enter the UK by applying for the HPI Visa effective 30th May 2022.

The HPI visa allows applicants who are granted this visa up to two years to live in the UK, either students to pursue a Master’s or Ph.D. or workers with similar academic qualifications.

High Potential Individuals from the US will be allowed to take up employment without sponsorship or set up a business or work as self-employed persons in the UK.

Persons who are considered as High Potential Individuals have and exhibit rare skills which are needed to take up either leadership or management positions in the UK. Such persons are deemed to have a high level of ambition and are able to take initiative. They have the potential, ability, and aspiration to be successful in leadership positions.

The High Potential Individuals’ description given to this visa could mean that students or graduates from these universities produce graduates who are highly skilled and are needed in the UK for work or to further their education.

US graduates who meet the HPI VISA criteria do not need a job offer for an eligible skilled job in the UK from a Home Office-approved sponsor.  While the route will be open to overseas graduates with a UK job offer, it will also be available to graduates who have no current job offer in the UK and who simply wish to look for work (any type of work) in the UK.
