UPSA Students Parliament House Inaugurates 12th Parliament in Grand Style
In a resounding celebration of democratic values and student leadership, the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Wednesday 16th August, 2023 witnessed the grand inauguration of its 12th Student Parliament under the theme “Empowering Voices, Shaping Tomorrow: The Power of Student Leaders and Their Role in Shaping the Future.” The Student Parliament House is a club on UPSA campus that has captured the essence of democracy and civic engagement by emulating the very heart of our nation’s governance; the National Parliament of Ghana. The event brought together academia and practical application in a vibrant display of engagement and discourse.
With an air of enthusiasm, Mr. Michael Avenorgbo, the esteemed Patron of the UPSA Student Parliament House, opened the ceremony with a warm welcome address. Acknowledging the pivotal role of student leaders, he applauded the outgoing executives for their dedication to fostering an environment of dialogue and progress. “Your tireless efforts, dedication, and commitment have paved the way for the vibrant environment that this club represents today”, he stated. Congratulating the new executives, he pledged his unwavering support and guidance throughout their tenure, highlighting the importance of unity in shaping a brighter future. The Patron’s words resonated with unity and support, underlining the collaborative spirit required for effective leadership.

The ceremonial proceedings gained depth through the insightful lecture delivered by Dr. Joseph Gerard Nii Tetteh Nyanyofio, a distinguished guest and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for La Dadekotopon Constituency. Dr. Nyanyofio’s unique blend of academia and practical experience as a Senior Lecturer at UPSA added credibility to his words. He illuminated the theme by emphasizing the profound impact student leaders can have on shaping the course of society. As scholar in Public Administration, Dr. Nyanyofio’s presence bridged the gap between theoretical learning and real-world application, inspiring students to recognize their potential as leaders and change agents. “The essence of leadership is not confined to titles or positions; rather, it is embedded in the power to inspire, to advocate, and to drive positive change” he noted. His lecture underscored the potency of student leaders in driving transformative change. His words resonated with the theme, encouraging young leaders to aspire for excellence and contribute to shaping a future aligned with their vision.
Adding a unique dimension to the event, Surveyor Maxwell Kwame Lukutor, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Parliamentary Candidate (PC) Elect for South Tongu Constituency, blended his expertise in land surveying with the broader discourse on responsible leadership. Drawing parallels between precision in surveying and governance. “As a licensed surveyor, I am well acquainted with the significance of accurate measurements and meticulous planning. In the same vein, the conversations that take place within the Parliament House are like the surveyors’ instruments, guiding our collective journey toward a more enlightened future. Your voices, your ideas, and your actions are the tools that will help define the landscape of our society” he noted. This intersection of expertise and leadership underscored the dynamic nature of effective decision-making. His speech offered a fresh perspective on the role of accuracy in shaping a holistic future.
The event also welcomed Mr. Osman Ayariga; the Deputy National Youth Organizer for the opposition NDC, who injected a thought-provoking dimension into the proceedings. Mr. Ayariga’s speech delved into the NPP government’s proposed 10% tax on sports betting and lotto, voicing the NDC’s stance against the tax. His remarks showcased the significance of youth voices in policy advocacy and the role of student leaders in influencing government decisions.
