Your credible source of education and general news, Ghana Education News has sighted a video of a 10-year-old boy operating a Galamsey excavator for a GHS4500 a month plus GHS500.00 for feeding. The location where the video was shot can not be authenticated however, there is all indication that the video emanated from a Galamsey site in Ghana.
Per the laws of Ghana, no child should be engaged in any work that deprives him or her of access to education. Again, children should not be engaged in work that is injurious to their health and well-being.
While this boy may be said to be engaged in work, he does that while his colleagues are in school. The financial gains of the boy per the commentary being provided in the background is GHS4500.00
The daily income of the boy is more than what some private school teachers are paid in Ghana while his estimated monthly income is more than what a professional teacher is paid in Ghana on a monthly basis.
Per the commentator in the video, going to school or accessing education is not always important given that a 10-year-old boy is able to operate an excavator with ease which earns him a decent daily salary plus an allowance totalling GHS500o.00
“…When you guys talk, you say school, school, school. Is school the only means to get a job? look at a child who is just 10 years old and how he is driving the excavator. In a month he is paid GHS4,500.0 plus an additional GHS500.00 for feeding. I have seen someone who has completed university and is into Galamsey, others have completed and are home unemployed…what to eat is even a challenge for such graduates. You guys should learn a trade/ skill. Excavator… ten-year-old boy…just watch, you will feel his zeal. Ah ..ten years, he is working very well. …” The commentator said in the viral video.
