VRA with Swift Response: Constructing a Bypass Road to Mepe
VRA with Swift Response: Constructing a Bypass Road to Mepe: The Volta River Authority (VRA) has stepped up to the plate in a time of need, demonstrating their commitment to the well-being of the people in the North Tongu District. In response to the flooding of the main road leading to the St Kizito Safe Haven, VRA has constructed a vital bypass road connecting St Kizito Safe Haven Road to the Battor-Mepe road. This road serves as a lifeline for the community, ensuring that relief items, medical supplies, and services can be swiftly delivered to the people of Mepe.
The importance of this bypass road cannot be overstated. With the main road submerged due to flooding, the people of Mepe had been forced to rely on boats and canoes to cross the inundated areas. This not only posed a risk to their safety but also increased the potential for waterborne diseases. The newly constructed road provides a safer and more efficient means of transportation for both people and essential supplies.
VRA, in collaboration with various relief agencies, including the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the Ghana Health Service, has been providing financial support to address the emergency. However, their commitment goes beyond funding. VRA has demonstrated its technical expertise by undertaking this road construction, exemplifying its dedication to improving the conditions of those residing in safe havens, particularly Mepe.
VRA’s Emergency Preparedness Plan outlines the procedures and protocols to be followed in the event of a spill. While a spill of this magnitude has not occurred in many years, VRA remains on standby to address any gaps or shortfalls as the controlled spill continues. The swift response of VRA has been met with gratitude from the North Tongu District Chief Executive, Hon. Divine Osborne Fenu.
Emmanuel Antwi-Darkwa, the Chief Executive of VRA, further reinforced the organization’s unwavering commitment when he visited Mepe on October 21, 2023. During his visit, he oversaw the distribution of relief items and drugs, and he took the opportunity to reassure the people of VRA’s dedication to improving their quality of life.
Mr. Antwi-Darkwa stated, “We have been with you from the first day of the spill, and we are always in communication with NADMO, the military, Ghana Health Service, your chiefs, and your DCEs on how we can continue to help. Please let us know whatever you need; don’t worry, we will be with you until the very end.”
In total, VRA has allocated over 50% of its 20 million Ghana Cedis budget to provide crucial relief items, including portable toilets, sachet water, maize, diapers, sanitary towels, mosquito nets, toilet paper, baby food, and various other essentials. Additionally, VRA’s healthcare services have been actively engaged in providing health education and medical screenings for a range of ailments, ensuring the well-being of the affected communities.
VRA’s rapid response and comprehensive support for Mepe reflect a dedicated effort to make a positive impact during a challenging time. Their actions serve as a testament to the organization’s commitment to the welfare of the communities it serves.
