Why should somebody who is driving a V8 get free fuel? – Bernard Avle asks
Why should somebody who is driving a V8 get free fuel? Bernard Avle asks, as political appointees and highly paid public officers still get free fuel at a time the economy is struggling, and the ordinary cannot buy fuel or pay their transport fares to get to work.
As fuel prices go up, transport fares follow in the upward direction, however the government continues to offer free fuel to political appointments and other elected political office holders when the average Ghanaian can not take care of his or her transport fares.
Speaking about the fuel price hikes, the public debt, and the ailing economy, the celebrated journalist asked tough questions to drive home the need for government to take a second look at the free fuel it provides some government employees at this critical moment.
“In Ghana, we have not fought for public things to be done for us. Look at the Trotros human beings sit in.
Why should someone who is driving a V8 get free fuel, and I who comes to clean his office, and who lives in Kasoa, there is no government transport service to bring me to work?” He quizzed.
He further queried why the Ghanaian can not get a train from where he lives to work, but instead struggles to join a Trotro to come only to come and clean the office of someone who is a public servant and is paid so much and he or she gets fuel coupons for free.
According to his line of argument, public officeholders who enjoy all the luxury that comes as a result of their political appointments will not take decisions to favour ordinary workers.
He called for the removal of all fringe benefits attached to the salaries of political appointees and politicians. He went on to add that until those in authority feel the heat, they will not do what ordinary citizens want.
Avle could not understand how appointees paid six times or more than the ordinary Ghanaian worker receives fuel coupons to fuel his V8.
He chastised the government for failing to invest in public transport, and not reducing fuel prices, yet the government gives fuel coupons to persons driving V8. He called on the government to cut down on all expenses that further burden the economy unnecessarily
