¢190m invested in Zongo development – Ofori-Atta
In a significant move towards fostering development in Zongo communities, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta revealed that the Akufo-Addo government has invested GH¢190.3 million through the Zongo Development Fund. Presenting the 2024 budget, Ofori-Atta highlighted this substantial investment as one of the government’s noteworthy achievements over the past seven years.
Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, in August of the previous year, inaugurated several projects funded by the Zongo Development Fund in the Ashanti Region. The Zongo Development projects stated by Ken Ofori Atta, includes furnished classroom blocks, a water system, and a Community Sports and Social Centre, were inaugurated in Asokore, Effiduase, and Bantama as part of the government’s commitment to comprehensive and inclusive development in Zongo communities.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized the significance of addressing historic deprivation and lack of development in Zongo communities. He declared that the Zongo Development Fund plays a pivotal role in realizing the development objectives related to Zongo communities.
Highlighting the unprecedented nature of the Fund’s establishment, Dr. Bawumia noted that, historically, no deliberate budget had been allocated for the development of Zongo communities since Ghana’s independence. The Zongo Development Fund Act 964 (2017) empowers the fund to provide basic services, strategic infrastructure, and promote various aspects including health, education, sanitation, entrepreneurship, skills development, social protection, economic development, peace, security, tourism, arts, culture, and tradition.

The Vice President in support of Ofori Atta’s statement that “¢190m invested in Zongo development – Ofori-Atta” highlighted the substantial progress witnessed in the past four years, with over 300 projects undertaken by the Zongo Development Fund across the country. These projects include potable drinking water, community roads, modern school infrastructure, ICT labs, and Community Sports Centres, popularly known as Astroturfs.
According to Ken Ofori-Atta, Zongo communities benefiting from the construction of Astroturfs include Madina, New Fadama, Kyebi, Tafo, Walewale, Salaga, Akyem Oda, Kwabeng, Agogo, Dodowa, Manhyia (work in progress), Larabanga, Esikado, Chiraa, Sowutuom, Yeji, Bolga, and Dunkwa-on-Ofin.
The government remains steadfast in its commitment to bridging the gap between Zongos and other communities in Ghana, signaling a transformative era for these historically underserved regions.
