The 2023 BECE marking is already underway for all subjects. Information we have picked from reliable sources reveals what is happening with regard to the BECE English Language Paper.
Update on 2023 BECE Marking – English Language Paper
Available information shows that in the comprehension section of the English language paper, 2023 BECE candidates were able to answer questions A–D.
However, many of the candidates fell short when it came to answering Question E of the English Language Paper.
Most students deviated from finding the words for the expressions in Q.E.
The expressions in question are
“One thing puzzled her.”
“Often under the weather”
“All hands were on deck.”
Students struggled here and could not score good marks, according to our sources.
Again, a lot of candidates struggled with the last part of section B where they were required to provide synonyms or phrases to replace underlined words in the passage.
For the last part of the Comprehension, that is finding other words or phrases for the words listed,
Most candidates did copy work, as they wrote the same words and phrases as answers for the words that were given.
Though they cannot be penalized, candidates could use different terms.
Under the Composition or Essay section, most of the candidates attempted Q3, which is an article for publication on the effect of improper waste disposal and how to solve it.
Most of the candidates who attempted this question scored good marks, except for a higher level of poor grammar as compared to the previous year’s candidates.
Most of the students who attempted to write the story deviated along the way.
Some are doing well with the story “Indeed it was a great achievement”
But most students are finding it difficult to write good answers. The essays are likely to negatively affect the performance of candidates in the English paper.
Students who score less than 20 in composition and comprehension will be in hot waters.
During the 2023 BECE Home mock, Ghana Education News raised concerns about students’ poor essay writing skills and their inability to provide good words or phrases as replacements for underlined words in passages. This is showing up in the answers provided by candidates in the English paper.
