2024 BECE Prepertion: 5 Worried Observations About Parents – Education-News News
As a parent whose ward will be writing the 2024 BECE, are you really interested in the success of your ward? Are you asking the school he or she attends the right questions? Are you getting value for money in terms of the teaching and learning that goes on in the school? Have you bothered to ask how well the school performed in the last two BECEs, and have you gotten any documents as proof of their performances? If you are not asking all the right questions, your ward may end up not getting the best result he or she can get if the school is not truly dedicated to excellence at the BECE.
As Junior High Schools prepare their form three students for the 2024 BECE, parents need to be very observant of what schools are teaching.
Creative Arts and Design as well as Career Technology
Our observation of schools visited, parents interviewed, and learners interacted with shows that some schools are not teaching students the content of the new curriculum for Creative Arts and Design as well as Career Technology.
Rather, students in JHS3 are still learning BDT options such as Home Economics and Pre-Technical Skills. The 2024 BECE preparation will yield no expected result if schools do not work on teaching their students the new curriculum.
While the new subjects were created out of the old ones, the current JHS3 students were supposed to have been introduced to the content of the creative arts and design as well as career technology from JHS1.
If schools that started using the new curriculum started the migration late, then students in JHS will be lagging behind.
This has the potential to affect the general performance of students in JHS3.
Some parents do not keep an eye on their JHS3 students
Again, parents need to keep an eye on their JHS3 students. Find out from the students whether they comprehend what the various subject teachers are teaching.
Where students have challenges, it will be prudent that parents do their best to visit the school and have solution-seeking conversations with the school and teachers.
Approach to teaching, teacher experience and methods of teaching, and the school and class environment all contribute to the performance of students and their preparation. These can positively contribute to the 2024 BECE preparation and the resulting outcomes for students.
Parents need to investigate school factors that are not helping their wards and find solutions.
The 2024 BECE is nearly six months from today; hence, parents need to do their independent investigation of school factors that, if not handled now, can create challenges for the effective preparation of the BECE candidate.
Schools must also intensify efforts towards teaching students how to answer questions, the presentation of answers, and the need to write answers with clarity.

Parents not getting past questions and answers for their ward’s early enough
Parents must obtain past questions and answer booklets for their children for at least the six main subjects even though they will be the first to take the BECE in July 2024 using the 2020 curriculum that the NaCCA has introduced. These subjects are English language, mathematics, integrated science, social studies, religious and moral education, and ICT. Past examination questions are excellent materials that can help in the 2024 BECE preparation of candidates.

The students can learn so much from these past questions: how to approach questions, practice, revise, and how to respond to similar questions.
Parents do not show a keen interest in mocks.
Mock examinations are very important for every student preparing for the BECE. Schools and teachers are encouraged to explain to their learners why mock examinations are conducted and how they can help the students prepare. Students need to be educated on why they must avoid looking for leaked examination questions for their mock examinations. The new trend where students want to do well in their mocks by looking for leaked questions will only defeat the reasons for the conduct of the mock examination.
Parents never see their ward’s mock papers or marked scripts.
Parents need to discourage schools from gifting marks to students who perform poorly in the mock examinations. Such a practice can easily hide the weakness of the student, the inefficiency or poor quality of work by the subject teacher, and also hide the school’s preparation flaws from parents. It is even more worrying if your ward writes mocks and you, as a parent, never see the marked scripts. Insist on seeing all marked scripts from the school. You can also call the school to get the scores your ward obtained in the mock.
Do not pamper your ward; push and encourage him or her to study.
Parents should push their wards to revise well and put in their best in each mock. Parents should demand feedback from the school in terms of reports of the candidate’s performance and their strengths and weaknesses.
